Charles Sebastian LaCugna Ph.D.

Charles Sebastian LaCUGNA, Ph.D. What a man, what a life, what a glorious example! Charles was born in Sicily in 1914 and passed through Ellis Island at age six. He was a member of the Christian Brothers de la Salle for fourteen years (1930-1944) and was educated at Manhattan College, Fordham University, St John’s College, the University of Notre Dame, and the University of Washington. He moved to Seattle in 1945 to establish the political science department at Seattle College, now Seattle University. He enjoyed a distinguished forty-year career there as a professor until his retirement in 1987. He served as an arbitrator, mediator and counselor for three decades and authored Introduction to Labor Arbitration (1988). Charles enjoyed a lengthy retirement and was thoroughly engaged in learning, serving others, and deepening his spiritual roots. Few men are as fortunate as Charles, and even fewer are as kind, generous and attentive as he was. We miss his loving presence and wise counsel. Charles died peacefully in Seattle surrounded by his family and a circle of loving friends. He is survived by his beloved Catherine Leahy Mowry, whom he cherished for 59 years; his daughters, Margaret, Mary, Barbara and Teresa; and his son, Joseph. He loved and enriched an extended family that includes his sister, Lucy Yakowenko; sons-in-law, Fred, Terry, Bob and Brian; grandchildren, Peter, Kristine, Shannon, Sarah, Andy, Colin and Graham; and great-grandchildren, Brittany, Marco and Junior. He was pre- deceased by his daughter, Catherine Mowry LaCugna. He extended a warm welcome and easy hospitality to many friends over the years, and this circle of friends mourns our loss. A Celebration of Life Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 27, at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Capitol Hill, his spiritual home for more than fifty years. Charles dedicated his life to three great pursuits: family, spirituality, and scholarship. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Holy Names Academy, 728-21st Avenue East, Seattle, WA 98112; or the Jesuit Retirement Fund, Box 86010, Portland, OR 97286. Bill,

Hugh Biens starred at Manhattan Prep, a small school located on one floor of De La Salle Hall on the Manhattan College campus. Biens led the Jasper Prepsters to either a NYC title or the CHSAA final four, quite an achievement. The scuttlebutt was that Manhattan College recruited Biens but Georgetown’s pitch included a scholarship to law school. I assume that was within NCAA rules ’cause the Jesuits wouldn’t cross the ethics line, would they? The Christian Brothers closed Manhattan Prep around 1971 as they were running out of Brothers to staff the faculty.

Dear Joe,

Hugh was a good one.

Alumni Spotlight: Joe Lennon

Joseph Lennon earned his MA from the Boston College Irish Studies Program in 1996. Since then, he has published widely on Irish, Indian, and British literature and culture. His book, Irish Orientalism: A Literary and Intellectual History (Syracuse University Press, 2004), was awarded the Donald J. Murphy Prize for Distinguished First Book by the American Conference for Irish Studies (ACIS). Irish Orientalism has also drawn high praise from other eminent scholars; Edward Said calls is a “fascinating study” and Stephen Howe characterizes it as “undoubtedly the fullest, most detailed and perceptive analysis of these themes yet to have been attempted.” Lennon earned his PhD at the University of Connecticut in 2000, and is currently Associate Professor of English at Manhattan College. He is also the poetry editor of The Recorder, the journal of the American Irish Historical Society. Professor Lennon will be visiting Boston College in April to offer a graduate seminar on Irish Orientalism.

To sum all of this up, I am interested in meeting some other gamers here on Long Island as the commute/time that Manhattan College typically meets is a bit tough for me to make on a regular basis. I may seem busy, and I am, but if I find a game with a group of nice people, I can and will make time for it. Sundays typically would work out well, and I’d be willing to travel as far west as some parts of queens, and as far east as wading river or port jefferson.

That being said, I hope to meet some of you soon! Sadly I will not be able to make it to ICON at stony brook as I have previous engagements on all of the days this year, but I am sure it will be a blast and that, yes, I am missing out.

Cheers,
Chris
