HIGHER EDUCATION SERVICES CORPORATION ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF $1 MILLION DEFAULT PREVENTION GRANT

The New York State Higher Education Services Corporation issued the following news release:

The New York State Higher Education Services Corp. (HESC) will award $1 million to 29 schools to help prevent student loan defaults, HESC President James C. Ross announced today.

The grants, ranging from $4,800 to almost $50,000, will be awarded to competitively selected colleges and universities for their proposals designed to identify risks that contribute to student loan default and to develop and implement new programs which have the best potential to significantly reduce the dollar amount of defaulted loans.

“The U.S. Department of Education encourages continued efforts to ? reduce default, minimize the volume of dollars that go into default each year, and prevent student borrowers from the individual tragedy of loan default,” said Mark Walsh, Acting Director of Default Prevention and Management at the U.S. Department of Education.

“As many schools point to a lack of the necessary resources as an obstacle to engaging in proactive default prevention activities, the availability of grants enables more schools to become involved in this important work,” continued Walsh.

“HESC is pleased to award these competitive grants acknowledging the U.S. Education Department’s focus on default prevention and to improve financial literacy among students across New York,” said Ross.
“The 54 default prevention proposals HESC received demonstrate the dedication of financial aid administrators as they help their students manage their student loans,” Ross continued. “The winning proposals represent the most innovative approaches to this difficult problem.”
For example, Jefferson Community College will strengthen its outreach to high risk populations with a financial outreach specialist. The specialist will coordinate financial literacy sessions for incoming freshmen to increase financial awareness and money management skills.
The campus, located near the Ft. Drum Army base, has many military students in the population who are typically highly mobile and with whom losing touch is fairly common. Workshops and counseling will be targeted to these students and their families.

Additionally, the proposal will link the workshops to a credit-bearing course, Personal Finance, to increase the number of students exposed to formalized instruction in personal financial management.

Syracuse University’s winning proposal included the funding of a loan education specialist and in certain cases, giving a grant to help those students who may have to borrow excessive amounts to fund their education.

The grant winners are:

Grant recipients will be expected to report their progress after six months, with a final report due to HESC by March 26, 2008.
HESC is the nation’s largest in-state student loan guaranty agency and provides more grant and scholarship money to college students than any other state in the nation.

The state agency guaranteed nearly $7 billion in new and consolidated student loans in state fiscal year 2005-06 and provided $865 million through the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) to nearly 395,000 students in academic year 2005-06.

HESC administers New York’s 529 College Savings Program, a nationally-acclaimed program which boasts more than $6 billion in assets, and also handles more than 25 state and federal grants and scholarships.
HESC also provides training and technical services to financial aid administrators, high school counselors, and lenders.

Their purpose is to help Tranax Technologies be in position for its next phase of growth.”

The role of the newly created board of directors will be to serve as a sounding board and counsel to help the CEO and executive team. The board also is expected to implement practices and strategies as well as oversee hiring.

The five board members are expected to serve three-year terms. The team compromises non-executive directors Wolfgang H. Hausen, Jack McDonnell Jr. and Dr. Kathryn S. Hanson; executive directors Dr. Kwon and Heemook Kwon. Diane Holt Frankel will serve as board counsel.

Test tools critical to innovation
By Tom Ryan
EE Times

***Begin Quote***

Constant product innovation has driven a thriving equipment-manufacturing industry over the last two decades. Innovation’s enabler has been a steady stream of tools and technologies that help software developers work faster and smarter. Developers have clearly benefited from productivity-enhancing tools and technologies. Testers now need 21st-century tools to stay in parity. Without such solutions, test becomes a barrier to innovation.

Faceoffs are a critical aspect of lacrosse
By JOE LOMBARDI

When Manhattan College discontinued its wrestling program, Jim Ardizone was an athlete without a sport.

Until he discovered lacrosse.

Ardizone, now the boys varsity lacrosse coach at Tappan Zee, found a similarity between the sports.

“When they were facing off, it was kind of like wrestling for the ball,” said Ardizone, who graduated from Manhattan in 1999.
