Staten Island Supreme Court Justice Philip G. Minardo became the first Island justice in nearly 20 years to be named president of the city’s Association of Supreme Court Justices.

Minardo, administrative judge at state Supreme Court, St. George, was elected to the post during the organization’s annual meeting last night at the Appellate Division, Second Department Courthouse in Brooklyn.

He becomes the first Island Supreme Court justice to hold the position since retired Justice Thomas Sullivan served in 1988.

Minardo will oversee an organization that represents 187 Supreme Court justices who serve in the city’s five boroughs. The purpose of the association is to recommend legislative changes and address other issues in an attempt to improve judicial service to lawyers and litigants.

A graduate of Manhattan College and St. John’s University School of Law, Minardo began his career as an Island assistant district attorney in 1969 before moving into private practice in 1976.

After serving as special counsel to Sen. John Marchi from 1988 to 1995, Minardo was elected Supreme Court justice in 1995.

In 2005, Chief Administrative Judge Jonathan Lippman appointed Minardo to a four-year term as administrative judge at state Supreme Court, St. George.
