THIS IS THE GHOST OF ALUMNI’S PAST

As the proud owner of a new laptop, may I suggest that you just think for a moment of what it will mean if one morning you opening it up and it DOESN’T awake. Or, it gets lost or stolen. Or, you allow some bad software in.

Yup, I’m talking about the dreaded word … backup.

Fortunately, it easier now than it was when all of those things happened to me at various times.

You can use Mozy to create a secure online backup every time you’re connected to the inet. Sort of set it and forget it.

If you haven’t learned about Murphy’s Law, you will. Figure 3AM the night before something is due, you just type the last period on your opus, the lights blink, and your notebook is doing an imitation of a brick. If you have AT LEAST your data safely offsite and backed up, I won’t have to read and report about “student jumps out window following laptop. Both failed”.

Seriously. Yell if you have questions.

Go on Ebineezer. (Oh wrong movie!)

p.s., that advise is good for old Jaspers as well.

A grand jury accused Alan Placa of molestation

Placa, now 62, has been friends with Giuliani since childhood. The boys attended Bishop Loughlin High School in Brooklyn together, where Giuliani, Placa and Peter Powers, later to become chief aide to Giuliani during his first term as mayor of http://dir.salon.com/topics/new_york_city/ New York City, were in an opera club together. Placa and Giuliani would sometimes double-date. “After we’d drop off the girls,” Placa told the New York Times in 1997, “Rudy and I would spend hours in the car or walking down the sidewalks, debating ideas: religion, the problems of the world, what we wanted to be.” Giuliani, Powers and Placa later attended Manhattan College together and were http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2007/05/15/giuliani/index.html fraternity brothers at Phi Rho Pi.

Seeing such high spirits, City Councilmember Peter Vallone Jr. rounded out his father’s opening description by calling the scholarship awards ceremony “our favorite night”. Each year, several past winners are in attendance, and John Mark, a winner in 1996, recalled that his award paid for much of his first-year expenses at Manhattan College. He later studied at Oxford University in England and eventually got a law degree at St. John’s. His advice to all the winners was: “Stay involved!”
