STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A new general manager has been named at the Port Authority’s three Staten Island bridges, and he has quite a unique office.

Paul Pittari will report for duty at his new post high above the Goethals Bridge toll plaza later in August.

There, he will have a bird’s-eye view of all the comings and goings of more than 26 million vehicles a year.

Pittari also will oversee the total day-to-day operations of the Outerbridge Crossing and the Bayonne Bridge, which he said is the nicest from an aesthetic perspective, but was quick not to pick a favorite.

The Island’s Port Authority-owned crossings are undergoing a study to determine if all-electronic high-speed tolling can be implemented in the place of toll takers. The Goethals is also in the middle of a study to determine the future of the nearly 80-year-old span, which is due to be replaced. The draft environmental impact study for the Goethals Replacement Project is tentatively scheduled to be released by the U.S. Coast Guard next spring.

“It’s coming at an interesting time,” Pittari said of his new appointment. “I’m really looking forward to it.”

The new general manager will replace Jerry DelTufo, who has taken a new position at the Port Authority-owned World Trade Center.

Pittari has plenty of bridge experience under his belt, having served as Physical Plant Manager of the Port Authority’s three Staten Island spans from 2003 until last year, when he was named Chief of Maintenance at the PA’s New Jersey Marine Terminals.

Pittari, 38, a graduate of Manhattan College, holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering. He is a licensed professional engineer in both New York and New Jersey.

He lives in Clark, N.J. with his wife, Jennifer, and their three children.
