Patent attorney, inventor James J. Maune dies
(Newsday (Melville, NY) (KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Oct. 28–James J. Maune, a retired patent attorney with a flair for invention who had been a senior partner of the Baker Botts Llp firm in New York City, died Oct. 18 at his Plainview home.
Maune, who also was a professor of patent law at Hofstra University from 1989 to 1994, died of a heart arrhythmia, family members said. He was 64.
He held several patents, including one for a specialty antenna and microchip system that could determine the position of a football on the playing field, said one of his sons, James Maune Jr. of Bristow, Va.
“He was extremely humble, and knew a little bit about everything,” his son said.
Maune was born Dec. 10, 1942, in Jackson Heights, Queens. After attending St. Agnes Boys High School in the city, he earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Manhattan College in 1964 and a master’s degree in electrophysics from Polytechnic Institute in Brooklyn in 1968.
Maune worked as a development engineer for Wheeler Labs in Great Neck, as an engineer for Sedco Systems in Farmingdale, and as a senior development engineer for Hazeltine Corp. in Greenlawn.
In 1976, he graduated cum laude from St. John’s University School of Law. Maune became a lawyer because engineers were being being laid off in the early 1970s, his son James said.
He went on to become a partner in the law firm of Brumbaugh, Graves, Donohue & Raymond in the city, and then a senior partner at Baker Botts Llp.
Maune was an avid fisherman and hunter.
He was an active member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Plainview and a founding member of the St. Pius X Parish Knights of Columbus chapter.
In addition to his son James, he is survived by his wife of 42 years, Audrey; son Daniel Maune, of Poughquag; daughters Tara Bassette, of Glastonbury, Conn., and Tricia Habas, of Nanuet; his mother, Catherine Becker, of Golden, Colo.; a sister, Catherine Ferrere, also of Golden; and eight grandchildren.
Burial was in St. Charles Cemetery in East Farmingdale.
