ALFRED E. “BIG AL” STANCATI SR., 85, of Dana Point, Calif., formerly of RED BANK, a loving, devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away Sunday, Dec. 23, at home.

Born Sept. 29, 1922, in the Bronx, he moved to Red Bank in 1932. He graduated from Red Bank Catholic and attended Manhattan College before enlisting in the Army. He served with distinction in the European Theater of Operations as a combat engineer with the 3rd Army and then with ADSEC COMZ, participating in the Northern France and Rhineland campaigns. He was honorably discharged Dec. 7, 1945. Following World War II, he graduated from Manhattan College with a B.A. degree in 1950. Alfred married Margaret DeSantis in 1951 and raised their children in Red Bank. He worked as GM for Miller Highlife Distribution, owned Blue Ribbon Shoe Repair, Monmouth Street, and retired from the U.S. Postal Service. In 1988, he moved to California for a life of leisure. Golf became his passion at Shore Cliffs Golf Club, San Clemente, where he was known as “Jersey Al.” His quick wit, sense of humor and kind heart made him loved by many!

He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret; father, Antonio; mother, Grazia; and brother, Arthur, killed in action in 1944. Surviving are a son, Arthur, daughter-in-law, Lynne of Red Bank; daughter, Grace of Honolulu; son, Alfred Jr.; daughter-in-law, Michele of Toms River; six beloved grandchildren, Jason, Brianna, Anthony “AJ,” Miranda, Lindsy and Andrew; and his “extended” family, Mike Wood and Rapp Fitzsimmons of Dana Point.

A Memorial Mass will be offered Saturday at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church, Dana Point. The family requests that condolences be sent c/o Grace Stancati, P.O. Box 240453, Honolulu, HI 96824. Donations may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society www.leukemia-lymphoma.org.
