Biotech Training Center Names NCSU Professor as Director

Raleigh — Ruben Carbonell, a professor at N.C. State University, has been named the director of the Golden LEAF Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center.

The center, which is located at the Centennial Campus at NCSU, recently launched its operation.

Carbonell replaces Peter Kilpatrick, who recently resigned to become head of the College of Engineering at Notre Dame. Carbonell assumes the job on Jan. 1.

The training center was founded to train as many as 2,000 workers every year for North Carolina’s growing biotech industry.

Carbonell is a chemical and biomolecular engineering professor at NCSU. He also is director of the William R. Kenan, Jr. Institute for Engineering, Technology and Science.

“Ruben Carbonell is a distinguished researcher and talented administrator who has worn a number of hats during his nearly two dozen years at NC State,” said Larry Nielsen, NC State’s provost and executive vice chancellor. “We’re fortunate that we can put this important facility and its training programs – which will have such a tremendous impact on the growth of the biomanufacturing sector in our state – in his capable hands.”

Carbonell joined the NCSU faculty in 1984. He received an undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from Manhattan College and a PhD in chemical engineering at Princeton.

WALTER ROTHENHEBER

72, died unexpectedly at his home on December 14, 2007. Born, raised, and educated in Troy, NY, he was son of the late Nicholas and Barbara Neudecker Rothenheber. He received his elementary education at St. Lawrence School and secondary education at LaSalle Institute where he graduated with the rank of 1st Lieutenant. While at LaSalle, he played football, swimming and tennis for four years. Following graduation, he received a swimming scholarship to Manhattan College and enrolled in the School of Physical Education. While at Manhattan, he swam and played water polo and tennis for four years and during his junior and senior years, was captain of the swimming team. He was a member of Phi Epsilon Kappa and the National Education Honor Society. He graduated from Manhattan with a B.S. degree in Physical Education. During and after college, he was an Army reservist, attached to the 77th Infantry division, Military Police, for eight years, following which, he was honorably discharged in 1959. He then received a masters degree from New York University in administration of physical education, health and recreation. In 1956, Walter took employment with St. Mary High School in Greenwich, CT where he worked for 35 years. He served as the school’s athletic director for 25 of those years and taught various subjects and coached football, basketball, baseball and swimming. The latter sport for which he was most recognized. As a highly successful swimming coach, Walter founded the St. Mary’s H.S. Boys Swimming Program compiling a lifetime career won-loss record of 186-119 and eight consecutive Westchester private parochial high school championships. In 1975, he founded the girl’s swim program at the school. Walter also coached summer country club swimming programs at the Milbrook Club in Greenwich, CT where he produced 10 consecutive Fairfield County championship teams from 1959-1968 and the Newfield Club in Stamford, CT where he produced two more championship teams in 1971-72. Walter founded the highly successful Shark Swim Team in 1972, which produced many state, regional, junior national and Olympic sport festival champions as well as numerous national, Olympic trial and world championship qualifiers. His men’s and women’s Shark teams, from 1967 to 1985, combined, won twelve state level championships and eleven runner-up titles. Many of Walter’s swimmers went on to be collegiate champions, team captains and some followed him into the ranks of coaching. In national recognition of his accomplishments, Walter was selected as coach of the 1979 East team for the Olympics sports festival at Colorado Springs. He was one of the founding members of the Connecticut Swimming Association. Other recognitions include 1985 and 1986 Connecticut Swimming Coach of the Year, 25-year service award from the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association and in 1985, became a level five coach of that same organization, the highest-ranking coaching level in the United States. In 2005, he was inducted into the Greenwich Aquatic Hall of Fame. He resigned from the Shark program in 1989 and in 1991 retired from St. Mary High School. More recently, he was employed by the Orienta Beach Club in Mamaroneck, NY as manager of all outdoor sports activities and lastly at Burning Tree Golf Club in Greenwich as the course starter.

He is survived by several cousins and dear friends.

Funeral Mass on Friday at 10am in the Church of St. Margaret Mary Church, Homestead Street at Western Avenue, Albany, NY with burial to follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Troy, NY. Visiting hours are on Thursday from 5 until 8pm at the Doran Funeral Home, 9 South Lake Avenue, Troy, NY. Memorial donations, in Walter’s memory, to the Greenwich Aquatic Hall of Fame Scholarship Fund, c/o YWCA, Boston Post Road, Greenwich, CT 06830.

The Office I Left Giuliani

ON “Meet the Press” a week ago, Rudolph W. Giuliani attempted to deflect criticism of his close relationship with his former police commissioner, Bernard Kerik, by saying that his misjudgment of Mr. Kerik had to be weighed against his other accomplishments. “How can I not have pretty good judgment about the people who work for me and not been able to turn around the United States attorney’s office?” he asked. But Mr. Giuliani’s claim to have turned around the Manhattan United States attorney’s office is not only untrue, it is an insult to the outstanding men and women who have served in that office over the last 50 years.

When he became the United States attorney for the Southern District of New York in 1983 (I was his immediate predecessor), Mr. Giuliani did not take over a moribund prosecutor’s office; he became the head of the premier United States attorney’s office in the country, with a tradition of excellence stretching back 30 years under the leadership of such legal luminaries as Robert M. Morgenthau, the current Manhattan district attorney, and Robert B. Fiske Jr., the original Whitewater special prosecutor. Mr. Giuliani took over an office staffed by a group of the finest young lawyers in the country.

To Mr. Giuliani’s credit he made no major changes in the staff or leadership group he inherited. He retained William Tendy, a career prosecutor, as chief assistant, and Lawrence Pedowitz, a former Supreme Court law clerk and partner in the firm of Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, as chief of the criminal division. It was primarily the outstanding lawyers Mr. Giuliani inherited who investigated and prosecuted the important cases.

This is not to say that Mr. Giuliani was not a good trial lawyer and that he did not provide effective leadership. But the important cases prosecuted during his tenure did not result from some unique initiative or insight on his part.

Mr. Giuliani claims that he came up with the idea of prosecuting the leaders of each of the major crime families in a single case under the Racketeer-Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. While that may be his perception, the idea was first broached by the head of the criminal section of the F.B.I.’s New York office in a meeting with me and my staff approximately a year before Mr. Giuliani took office. By the time he was sworn in, the office was laying the groundwork for that case and had in place wiretaps on three of the five organized-crime families in New York City. Among the lawyers already assigned to those cases were Louis Freeh, later the director of the F.B.I., and Barbara Jones, later the chief assistant district attorney for Manhattan and now a United States district court judge.

While the United States attorney’s office under Mr. Giuliani prosecuted a number of high-profile securities fraud cases, including those against Ivan Boesky and Michael Milken, the original information from which these cases developed came from Merrill Lynch, whose compliance staff had spotted what appeared to be insider trading in an account in the Bahamas. This account turned out to be owned by Dennis Levine, a leading Wall Street investment banker who, when confronted with the evidence against him, agreed to cooperate with the United States attorney’s office.

The principal case that Mr. Giuliani personally tried during his six-year tenure, that of Stanley M. Friedman, the Bronx Democratic leader accused of corruption, had its genesis in an investigation conducted by the F.B.I. in Chicago. A person who had been caught paying bribes to Chicago city officials revealed to the F.B.I. that he had also been paying bribes to an official in the New York City Parking Violations Bureau. That official, Geoffrey Lindenauer, in turn cooperated in the investigation, and this led to the indictment — and ultimately the conviction — of Mr. Friedman.

There is no question that Mr. Giuliani is an able lawyer. It is unfortunate, however, that he feels he must denigrate the accomplishments of others to advance his own political interests. What has made the office of the United States attorney for the Southern District of New York an example of what a great prosecutor’s office should be is its tradition of hiring the best lawyers available, without regard to party affiliation, and allowing them to do their job free from political influence. Mr. Giuliani did not have to turn the prosecutor’s office around; he simply had to keep it moving forward.

John S. Martin Jr. was the United States attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1980 to 1983.

Gerald F. Precourt

PRECOURT, MAJOR GERALD F., 83, of Old Pocasset Lane, formerly of Middle Highway, Barrington, passed away on December 13, 2007 at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the loving husband of the late Elizabeth (Doyle) Precourt. They had been married for fifty-one years.

Born in Providence on June 22, 1924, he was the son of the late Herbert O. and Elizabeth (McHugh) Precourt, and the brother of the late Herbert A. Precourt. Major Precourt graduated from LaSalle Academy in 1942, and shortly after entered the U.S. Army Air Force. After completing basic training at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis, MO, he underwent pre-flight training at Embry-Riddle Flight School in Arcadia, FL. The Major then received basic flight training at Bainbridge, GA, and twin-engine flight school training at Columbus, MS, which he completed in November, 1944. Subsequent instruction in B-24 flight training followed at Maxwell Field, AL. He then underwent training in flying B-29 bombers at Shepard Field in Shreveport, LA.

After the war, Major Precourt entered the Air Force Reserve, from which he retired in 1984, after forty-two years of service. He attended Manhattan College, and in 1949 entered into employment with the State of RI Dept. of Public Works, Division of Roads and Bridges. He retired from the position of Chief Draftsman in 1980. After his retirement, Major Precourt and his wife Elizabeth, a former Providence and Barrington middle school teacher, worked for JANCO, Inc. constructing greenhouses across the state for five years.

He leaves a sister-in-law, Ruth Precourt; a niece Caroline and her husband Matthew Ponko, as well as two grandnieces, Chiara and Caitlin, and a cousin, Robert McClellan.

His funeral will be held Monday from the URQUHART MURPHY Funeral Home, 800 Greenwich Avenue, Route 5, Greenwood, Warwick (Exit 12A on I95) at 8 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in Immaculate Conception Church, Oaklawn Avenue at Garden Hills Drive, Cranston at 9 a.m. Burial with full military honors will take place in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.

Eugene Cuomo

CUOMO Eugene of Nyack, New York passed away on December 13, 2007 at the age of 78. Bora January 30, 1929 in Yonkers, NY to Michael and Helen (Tully) Cuomo. Eugene graduated from Manhattan College in 1951 and was a Professional Engineer. In 1951 he married Louise Faini in Yonkers, NY. He is survived by his loving wife Louise, daughters Jeanette Bossi and husband David Koravos of San Diego, CA, Donna and husband Robert Patch of Valley Cottage, NY and Carrie and husband Thomas Rooney of Oradell, NJ., beloved grandfather to Monica, Steven and Krista Bossi, Elena and Alex Patch, and Luisa, Gregory, Christopher and Claudia Rooney. He is also survived by his brother Leo Cuomo and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brother Paul Cuomo. Family will receive friends on Sunday from 2-6PM at Higgins Funeral Home Congers, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday December 17, 2007 10AM at St. Paul’s Church Congers, NY. Interment will follow at Fred Loescher Veterans Cemetery New Hempstead, NY. His final resting place will be in the heart of each person’s life he touched. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Eugene’s name to a charity of your choice.
