Teacher profile
Name: Peter Barbella
Age: 55
Grades/Subject/School: Grades 10-12 mathematics, Newman Catholic High School in Wausau
Residence: Athens
Family: Wife, Trina; children, David, 22, and Lisa, 20
Education: Earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Manhattan College in New York and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and secondary education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Something readers should know: I enjoy reading, exercising, photography, socializing with family and friends.
What or who encouraged you to choose teaching as a career? The autonomy teachers have in their classrooms right from day one.
What have been your most satisfying moments in the classroom? Most students are respectful of the school setting. However, when you have a student who is not and you can get that student on your side and experience a change in behavior, that is when I most feel like I am making a difference.
What are you most looking forward to this school year? Every day, I have the opportunity to be a positive influence and bring enjoyment into the lives of more than 100 young adults. That’s a lot to look forward to each day, and I do.
What do you enjoy most about teaching? Watching students become more self-disciplined, more self-confident, more appreciative of the world around them during the course of the year, and having them enjoy themselves in the process.
