Date of Death: 02/23/2008 FDNY deputy chief treated others with respect Former FDNY Deputy Chief Warren Haring Sr., 87, of West Brighton, a man known for always treating others with respect during his 45 years on the job, died Saturday at home.
“He believed in serving the public,” said his son, FDNY Borough Commander Thomas Haring. “He taught by example.”
Born in the Bronx, Mr. Haring was brought to Staten Island in 1928, settling in West Brighton. He lived in Grant City for many years until returning to West Brighton in 1990.
He graduated from St. Peter’s Boys High School in 1937, and joined the Navy five years later. He served during World War II aboard a destroyer escort, the Melvin R. Nawman. From his ship, he witnessed the raising of the American flag on Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima, his family said. He was honorably discharged in 1945 as a second-class torpedo man.
Mr. Haring joined the FDNY in 1947 and was appointed to Engine 153 in Stapleton. His desire to become a firefighter was triggered by his father’s career as a police officer during the Great Depression.
“He believed he was a city servant,” said his son, Thomas. “He believed he worked for us – all of us.”
Mr. Haring was promoted to lieutenant in December 1953 and to captain five years later. With the promotion, he was assigned to Staten Island’s Division 8.
In 1965, Mr. Haring became battalion chief, and eight years later, deputy chief. He became executive officer of the Staten Island Borough Command in 1976. He retired in 1988.
Mr. Haring earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Manhattan College in 1953, and a master’s degree in education from Wagner College, Grymes Hill, in 1965.
His daughter, Kim McLaughlin, described Mr. Haring’s humor as “wry, sarcastic, comical.”
She noted that her father sent her funny and motivating letters while she was in college, one saying, “It is my fondest hope that you will be able to use three syllable words in normal conversation when they top your crown with the tasseled cap.”
Mr. Haring treasured his relationship with his wife, the former Delores Lynch. The couple, married for almost 60 years, constantly supported one another.
“He was very grateful for the life he shared with his wife,” his daughter said. “He just thanked her the other day.”
The former deputy chief enjoyed skiing, playing tennis and golf, and gardening. He also enjoyed dancing and was a member of the Staten Island Ballroom Dancers. Mr. Haring took part in the Senior Olympics and enjoyed swimming.
Mr. Haring was a parishioner of St. Christopher’s R.C. Church, Grant City, and later of Blessed Sacrament R.C. Church, West Brighton.
Thomas Haring, along with his two brothers, Warren, Jr. and Robert, are all members of the FDNY. The borough commander considered his father’s experience “a great resource.” Thomas added, “It was a tremendous asset for me.”
In addition to his wife, Delores; sons, Thomas, Warren and Robert; and daughter, Kim, Mr. Haring is survived by another daughter, Ceil Andriola, and 13 grandchildren.
The funeral will be Thursday from the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament R.C. Church. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery, West Brighton.
