Robert E. Ford

Robert E. Ford, age 91 of Woodstown, died Tuesday, March 4, 2008 in Bridgeton Hospice.

Born in Lakewood, he was the son of the late James S. and Mary Haughey Ford.

Robert graduated from Lakewood High School and attended Manhattan College and the Wharton Evening Program.

He served as a Captain in the U.S. Army during WWII in the 86th Chemical Mortar Batallion. He fought during the Battle of the Bulge and D-Day, and he earned a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.

Robert retired in 1979 after 40 years with DuPont Chambers Works working as an accountant/supervisor. He was a member of St. Joseph¹s RC Church in Woodstown, was a charter member of the Lakewood Blackhawks Service Organization, was a past chairman of the BSA Roosevelt District and Woodstown Troop 38 Committee, was past trustee of Woodstown Presbyterian Church, was past president and treasurer of the Woodstown-Pilesgrove Library Association, and was past president of the Woodstown Fellowship Club and the 86th Chemical Mortar Battalion Association.

Robert was predeceased by his wife, E. Louise Burkle, and he is survived by his son, John R. Ford of Cherry Hill, his daughter, Mary E. Hodges of Houston, Texas, and his grandchildren, Gregory Ford, Alan Ford, Wesley Hodges and Sydney Hodges.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday, March 5th (sic) in St. Joseph¹s R.C. Church, 51 Broad St., Woodstown, where friends are invited to call from 10 to 11 a.m. Interment will be in the Salem County Veterans Cemetery in Pilesgrove.

Arrangements are under the direction of the H.T. Layton Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Woodstown, (856) 769-1515.
