Harold J. Connors
Harold J. Connors, age 87 of Regency at South Shore, formerly of Drexel Hill, Pa. and Scottsdale, Ariz., died on Friday April 25, 2008 at Saint Vincent Health.
He was born in New York City on June 11, 1920 the son of the late John and Josephine Connors. He attended Manhattan College, NYC from 1937 to 1940 and the Pratt Institute, in aeronautical engineering in 1941. He enlisted in the United States Naval Air Corps at the outset of WWII and served on aircraft carriers in the Pacific as a naval aviator, with numerous awards, citations, and medals. He married his wife Claire in 1944, between combat tours in the Pacific. He had the distinction of piloting the first U.S. Naval aircraft to land at the Yokosuka Naval Base on Tokyo Bay, shortly after the surrender of Japan on August 13, 1945. Upon completion of his U.S. Naval career in 1957, he was employed as a stock broker in Philadelphia until his retirement in 1980. He moved to Erie with his wife in 1997.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife Claire in 2004; two brothers: John and Kenneth Connors; and a sister Dorothy VandeStowe. He is survived by two daughters: Michelle Brennan and her husband David of Phoenix, Ariz.; Jean Downey and her husband John of Erie; a son Greg Connors and his wife Sherry of Fayetteville, N.Y.; two sisters: Peggy Sheehan and Joanne Rasmussen both of New York City; eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may attend a funeral mass at St. Jude The Apostle Church 2801 West 6th St. Erie on Friday May 2nd at 11am. with Monsignor Robert Brugger celebrant. [N.B.: In accordance with my liberal definition of what is a Jasper, I think if some one saw fit to mention his time at Manhattan College, then it must have been important to him. That makes him a Jasper to me. It's not a piece of paper, but that you've taken the lessons into your heart. Besides isn't one of the corporal works of mercy to bury the dead? I'll commend him to our fellow alums for their prayers.]
