FROM A RELIABLE CONFIDENTIAL SOURCE

RE: your recent Jasper Jottings posting,
this from the Supt. of Schools in Yonkers:

yes it is Our MC?

The recent piece in the Yonkers Tribune “Nothing Boring about Education in Yonkers” is yet another scurrilous attack besmirching the fine character and reputation of our Trustees, especially our Board President Bernadette Dunne.

After a short discussion with Mrs. Dunne on Tuesday, I became concerned and inquired why she sounded so displeased. She indicated that she was upset with the unfair characterization of her and her fellow trustees by the editor of the blog. [JR: This doesn't refer to ours.]

I assured her that her fine work as a Trustee and her continued support of the Yonkers Public Schools partnership with Manhattan College were not only appropriate, but also innovative. I further indicated that the harassment and muckraking of the editor of this blog had no substance and was based on pure fantasy created by him, most likely fed by disgruntled employees.

As you know, Mrs. Dunne has always acted above reproach, with the highest degree of professionalism and integrity. She has never used her position to cull favors. In fact, she will go the extra mile to make sure that her actions are both appropriate and professional at all times. This I can speak to definitively, as both Mrs. Dunne and I have over a ten year relationship as colleagues, when we were high school principals in the City of Yonkers in the mid 90’s.

On a personal note, I am pursuing advice of legal counsel; in an attempt to finally stop the unfair characterization of myself and others by this blog [JR: This doesn't refer to ours.] through the court system. The malicious and abusive personal assassination by the editor of this blog must be stopped once and for all.

Thank you for allowing me to clearly state my feelings concerning the mischaracterization of our colleague Bernadette Dunne.

Sincerely,

Bernard P. Pierorazio

Hi,

This is Carmine Vaccarino, BEE 1957.

Received your email seeking “intelligent life” at the other end of the keyboard. Pretty hard to find this in today’s society. I’ve become a cynic but I see remedial math and English courses for college freshmen, liberal thinking that says abortion and euthanasia is ok, 25% of high school female students having STDs, students in high school and college who believe they are entitled to a grade of A or B for just showing up, and other signs of entitlement and liberalism. You got me started!

However, at the ripe old age of 72, I am still enjoying life. I live in Queens New York with my wife Carole. I’m an active Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, an active member in my parish, and love traveling and visiting my grandchildren and the world.

I am an insurance agent with the Knights of Columbus and enjoy my work. My time is still basically my own. Incidently, if there is anyone out there who is interested in joining the Knights and becoming an agent, contact me.

Regards to all my classmates.

[JR: I'm only a 68BEEE, (paid extra for that Electronics E), and agree with your assessment. I believe that a Secular Progressive fascist / socialist movement captured our education system. Horace Mann led the adoption of the Prussian education system in Massachusetts in the 1850s. It spread like wildfire. Mann is often considered "the father of American public education". Unfortunately for us, and know to many of the then elite, the Prussian education system, which is virtually unchanged from its roots, was designed to make cannon fodder and factory workers that could be easily led by the elite. What you are reporting is the result of that remarkable German Engineering. And it ain't a BMW. IMHO the American Catholic Church, and others rolled over and played dead. They let their children be kidnapped by a runaway State. Look to the European history of the great tension between Church and King. When the King oppressed, the people used the Church to balance. Liberalism once meant moving from an autocrat to a laize faire human rights society. When the elite looked at post-revolutionary America free, energetic, and uncontrollable, they "knew better". Since then it has been a parade down to perdition. Government is a parasite on humanity. I can't find one redeeming aspect of it. Now we are supposed to worship the godless State who provides all things. I thought the Communists lost the Cold War? Unfortunately the chickens will come home to roost, with dire consequences, for all of us. Maybe we won't see the 'fun'. I hope I won't. History teaches us that those periods are very bad experiences.]

Structural engineering expert to deliver Kerr Lecture
Charles Thornton

11:13 a.m., April 30, 2008–Charles H. Thornton, chairman of Charles H. Thornton and Company LLC, will deliver UD’s third annual Arnold D. Kerr Lecture in Engineering Mechanics at 3:30 p.m., May 7, in the Trabant Center Multipurpose Room. The lecture, “Structural Engineering in the 21st Century,” will be preceded by a reception at 3 p.m.

A world-renowned structural engineer and member of the National Academy of Engineering, Thornton visited UD in 2002 to present a public lecture on the collapse of the World Trade Center.

In his talk, Thornton will share his observations on the “total disconnect between designers and constructors with respect to constructability” and discuss new computer-based tools that are improving the practice of structural engineering.

Through examples like the baseball stadium in Washington, D.C.; Soldier Field in Chicago; and Yankee Stadium, Giants-Jets stadium, the Nets arena, and the new New York Times headquarters in New York City, Thornton will discuss the positive changes occurring in the design and construction industry. “Paperless projects are a reality,” he says.

Thornton was founding principal of the New York-based Thornton-Tomasetti Group, where he spent most of his career. He earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Manhattan College and master’s and doctoral degrees from New York University. Thornton is a registered professional engineer in 26 states.

His 44 years of experience with Thornton Tomasetti included involvement in the design and construction of hundreds of millions of dollars worth of projects in the U.S. and overseas, ranging from hospitals, arenas and high-rise buildings, to airports, transportation facilities and special projects. An expert in the area of building collapse and structural failure analysis, he has testified for many clients during litigation.

In 1978, Thornton led the engineering team investigation of the causes of the collapse of the Hartford Coliseum Space Truss Roof and the scaffold at Pleasants Power Station in West Virginia. In 1987, he directed the investigation of the collapse of the New York State Thruway Schoharie Bridge, and in 1996 he was a member of the FEMA Building Performance Assessment Team that investigated the Oklahoma City bombing. Most recently, Thornton was a member of the oversight team on the National Institute of Standards and Technology study of the World Trade Center collapse investigation.

Thornton is also known for his dedication to community service through his work as chairman and founder of the ACE Mentor Program, a nonprofit organization that each year offers guidance and training to 1,800 inner city high school students in architecture, construction and engineering in 28 cities across the U.S.

Sponsored by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the lecture series was initiated in honor of Arnold Kerr, professor emeritus of civil engineering, upon his retirement in 2004. Kerr is an internationally recognized expert in engineering mechanics, with a particular focus on railway engineering.

The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Marikka Beach at (302) 831-2442

Babylon Village woman invited to meet the Pope

Laura A. Cassell, a resident of Babylon and CEO of Catholic Charities of Diocese of Rockville Centre, will attend the official United States arrival ceremony for Pope Benedict VXI at the White House on April 16, 2008. President Bush is scheduled to preside over the formal welcome on the South Lawn before hosting the pontiff in the Oval Office on what is the second day of the visit.

Pope Benedict’s official arrival is April 15 at Andrews Air Force Base. The trip marks his first visit to the U.S. as Pope. His six-day itinerary in both Washington and New York City will include the 9/11 Ground Zero site, addressing the United Nations, and celebrating Masses at baseball stadiums in both cities.

Cassell received her official invitation from the Oval Office via e-mail April 9.

“I am absolutely honored to represent the people of Long Island in welcoming our Holy Father to the United States, especially as April 16th is his 81st birthday. It is a personal joy for me as his very first encyclical letter was ‘God Is Love’ which addresses the vital role charity plays in our church and in the life of every community.

Cassell was appointed CEO of Catholic Charities by Bishop John R. McGann on December 1, 1999. She is the first female to hold this position in the Diocese of Rockville Centre and is also the first lay woman to serve in this capacity in any of the eight dioceses throughout New York State.

In December 2001, Bishop William Murphy appointed Cassell to the Bishop’s Cabinet as Secretary for Social Services, which brought additional responsibility for the Diocesan Offices of Prison Ministry and Respect Life. She was recently appointed to the finance commission of Caritas Internationalis, a confederation of Catholic social service organizations from around the world.

Cassel is a life-long resident of Long Island and graduated, Summa Cum Laude, from Manhattan College in 1979 with a degree in accounting. She and her husband, Gerald, are members of St. Joseph’s parish in Babylon.
