STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Peter P. Mazzella, 85, a veteran of two wars and a professor and scholar in the field of chemistry, died Sunday in the Care With Dignity Nursing Home in San Diego, Calif., losing a battle with Parkinson’s disease that lasted more than 10 years.

Mr. Mazzella was a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in both World War II and Korea.

He was an associate professor of chemistry and chairman of the chemistry department at the College of Staten Island until 1994. While there, he served as the moderator of the Newman Club.

His accompishments in the field of chemistry went beyond the classroom. Mr Mazella served as a secretary for the New York chapter of the American Chemical Society, and had published several papers on topics including the therapeutic effects of wine.

Before becoming an educator, he was an NYPD detective, as well as a consultant for Secony Mobile Company and the Sterling Salt Company. While at Sterling Salt, he earned a patent for the treatment of salt.

Mr. Mazzella graduated from New Dorp High School in 1940 and earned his bachelor of science degree from Manhattan College, the Bronx. He was a talented track and field athlete at both schools.

He received a master’s degree from Brooklyn College in 1959 and a doctorate in science education from New York University, Manhattan, in 1974.

Born in Red Hook, Brooklyn, he moved to Rosebank in 1929 and lived there until 1995, when he relocated to San Diego in 1995.

Mr. Mazzella enjoyed keeping an extensive stamp and coin collection. He was a Scoutmaster for eight years at Boy Scout Troop 42 in Stapleton and was given the Silver Beaver award for his efforts.

He was a parishioner of St. Joseph’s Cathedral, San Diego.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Anne; his three sons, Neil, Dan and Peter Mazzella Jr.; a sister, Josephine Gianattasio, and six grandchildren. Funeral arrangements, including burial in Riverside (Calif.) National Cemetery, were handled by the Merkley Mitchell Funeral Home, San Diego.

MAZZELLA, PETER PAUL Peter Paul Mazzella died after a long struggle with Parkinson’s Disease on June 22, 2008. Born October 27, 1922, in Red Hook, Brooklyn, NY. Married Anne Mazzella on August 31, 1947, they were married for 60 years. He was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Marine Corp. He served in World War II on Iwo Jima and again in Korea. He received his Ph.D in Chemistry from New York University. Peter is survived by his wife, Anne Mazzella, his three sons, Peter Mazzella, Jr., Neil Mazzella and Dan Mazzella; his six grandchildren Sarah Weber, Peter Mazzella, III, Matthew Mazzella, Joe Mazzella, Paul Mazzella and Sophia Mazzella; and one great-grandchild, Celine Mazzella. Funeral will be on June 26, 2008, at 9:30 a.m. at St.Joseph’s Cathedral, 1535 Third Avenue, San Diego, CA 92101. He will be buried at the Riverside National Cemetery with a Marine Corp Honor Guard on June 26th.
