SAN DIEGO, March 31 /PRNewswire/ — Amira Pharmaceuticals, a small molecule pharmaceutical company focused on the discovery and development of compounds to treat inflammatory disease, today announced the appointment of two additional members to its board of directors: Dennis M. Fenton, Ph.D. and Stephen W. Kaldor, Ph.D.

Dr. Fenton has 30 years of pharmaceutical and biotechnology experience, including over two decades at Amgen where he played an instrumental role in the development of the company into a global, fully-integrated, multi-billion dollar organization. Fenton’s broad background includes executive leadership roles in manufacturing, process development, sales and marketing, operations and quality control. His most recent role at Amgen was as Executive Vice President of Operations.

Fenton holds a B.S. in Biology from Manhattan College and a Ph.D. in Microbiology from Rutgers University.

He also spent over twelve years in various research and development roles at Eli Lilly and is a co-inventor of Viracept(R), a marketed AIDS drug.

Kaldor holds a B.S. in Chemistry from Columbia University and a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Harvard University.

About Amira

Founded in 2005 and headquartered in San Diego, Amira Pharmaceuticals is a small molecule pharmaceutical company focused on the discovery and early development of compounds to treat inflammatory disease.

The company combines the rigor of a big pharmaceutical company with the ingenuity and energy of a small company, creating an environment for efficient and effective pre-clinical and clinical program decisions. Its scientific founders have successfully worked together for more than a decade and were pivotal in the discovery of a number of inflammatory drugs, including Singulair(R). The drug hunters at Amira are now actively leveraging their history of success to create high-value compounds for the future.

In February 2008, Amira Pharmaceuticals and GlaxoSmithKline entered a global agreement for Amira’s FLAP inhibitor program. The deal follows positive phase 1 data from novel product candidate AM103 for the oral treatment of respiratory disease.

Amira has raised $40 million to date from investors including Novo A/S (Copenhagen, Denmark), Avalon Ventures (San Diego, CA), Prospect Ventures (Palo Alto, CA) and Versant Ventures (Menlo Park, CA). For more information, visit http://www.amirapharm.com.

Congratulations to Jason Hoover ’97 who was selected on Wednesday night for induction this December!

He will be joined by Pete Beyer ’60 (Track), Patrick McGrath ’95 (Track & Field), Dean Noll ’50 (Track), Luis Ostolozaga ’81 (Track), Dine Potter ’97 (Track), Tom Walraven ’76 (Baseball), and Carrie Wujick-Drum ’96 (Softball). This is indeed a distinguished group featuring two Olympians (McGrath & Potter) and multiple All-America selections.

It was my pleasure to have prepared Jason’s nomination package. No other basketball player was nominated, so its not to early for this group to start thinking about candidates for next year. Graduates from 1998 and earlier are eligible.

I miss your libertarian commentary at the end of your e-mails. I know the old e-mail you sent out would take a lot of time, but I found the last word pretty relevant. Any chance of including that in the weekly e-mail.

Jerry Plunkett ’83

[JR: There were two text block in the old issues. One I did where I tried to pass along something inspirational. And one done by another Jasper, who shared my Libertarian leanings. He preferred to not be identified. And, I'm easy. In the revamp, I offered for him to continue or uncloset or drop. He chose drop. At the risk of being politically incorrect, many folks just want the Jasper news and nothing but news. No sports; just news. I'll ask. Does any one else feel as Jerry does?]

Catholics, who believe that Jesus rose from the dead and in the Life everlasting, should have no problem dealing with social justice. Those of us who listened to the priests and brothers who sought to introduce us to the Church’s traditional teachings on social justice so many years ago would also know that it involves much more than a living wage, but the proper governance of all relations between employer and employed and the rich and poor.

Far too often, libertarians treat the labor of the poor as merely a commodity for sale at whatever price the market offers, instead of an aspect of their God-given humanity, possessing a far greater intrinsic value than any mere material object.

If the teachings of the Church on personal morality are to be followed and enforced with enthusiasm, so should those on social justice. I might have left the Church years ago if it weren’t for my undying hope that someday Catholics might take those teachings seriously.

William Bryk ’77

(3) Labor has fallen under the spell of the Socialists, Gooferment, and corrupt 'leaders'. The ability to withhold one's labor is the ultimate veto. In a truly free society, we can exclude those who offend us. A very powerful weapon. Unfortunately, Holy Mother Church has been led astray by its challenges. It is failing to be the traditional refuge of people oppressed by governments. The recent support of the American bishops for a higher minimum wage exposes them as flunkies of gooferment. Reducing liberty and ceding to gooferment a role it should not be playing -- arbiter of what two people can agree on. The fact that it throws poor people out of work and puts more people on the dole which means more gooferment seems to escape their notice. Social justice indeed. Virtual slavery is more like it.]

JEMAIL: an Edward J. Dillon Class of 1950 reported by Kaufman

Hi John,

I found an Edward J. Dillon Class of 1950 in the 1999 MCAD.

Isn’t it a shame that Alma Mater still cannot get an online directory up and running after all these years?

Just look at all the history and alums they will never again capture anything on.

Dona nobis pacem.

Rich Kaufmann, MP’64, MC’68

[JR: It must just not be important to them. I really really don't understand it. Ive talked until I am blue in the face. Social Media is hot. LinkedIn is valued at a billion dollars. Advertisers would die to sponsor ads on a network of 6k fat rich old (mostly white) guys with more money than brains. But, they have the old meme of "milk the alums". The famous inet quote about 'conversations' is never more accurate in the sense of Alma Mater and Alumni. The alums would flock to a site that was just average.]

Dear John,

Not necessarily for publication, but I thought Dottie’s comment was interesting and the fact that Manhattan College is in the Bronx was one of the criteria.

THIS WAS MY LIFE,ALTHOUGH FROM YONKERS,,IT WAS RIGHT NEXT TO THE BRONX,,,AND WE WALKED TO RIVERDALE TO VISIT THE SHRINE AT MOUNT ST. VINCENT COLLEGE.. THIS WAS A GREAT WALK BACK TO MY CHILDHOOD AND TEEN AGE YEARS….THANKS..FOR REVIVING THE MEMORIES OF THE GREAT SAFE TIMES TO GROW UP IN……… DOTTIE

# – # – #

YOU KNOW YOU’RE FROM THE BRONX IF:
You’ve played Ringaleevio and Kick the Can around your apartment building.
You know what a Spaldeen is.
You kept your bike underneath the stairway on the first floor hallway of your
apartment building.
Your fire escape was the closest thing you had to a back yard.
You know someone who went to Roosevelt, Taft, Morris, Columbus, Evander, Smith,Gompers, Addams, Dodge, Kennedy, Truman, Lehman, Clinton, Walton,Science,Monroe, Stevenson, All Hallows, Catherine’s, Ursula, Fordham, Rice, Aquinas, Barnabas, The Mount, Stock, Preston, Helena’s, Hayes, Butler, Raymond’s (boys or girls), Spellman, Scanlon, Truman, Tolentine and others.
You know that Lehman College is really Hunter College and that Manhattan College is in The Bronx.
You actually think the subway is fun and a very reliable form of transportation.
You’ve taken the Bx 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 16, 20, 31, 34 or 41 bus at least once in your life.
You agree that the Grand Concourse has too many lights and no parking!
When people ask you where you’re from you tell them the closest train stop or your parish.
You don’t go to Manhattan. You go ‘downtown.’ You say downtown and expect everyone to know that this means Manhattan.
You never realize you have an accent until one of your new neighbors tells you.
There was at least one pizza place about one block from your house.
You went to Orchard Beach and walked all the way to section 13 which was the best section.
You went to Rye Playland at least once a year.
Your friends came over to hang out on the stoop or in front of your house.
You’ve been to the Bronx Zoo & Botanical Gardens on class trips.
You shopped at Alexander’s on Fordham Road.
You call it the Stadium, not Yankee Stadium.
You used to go to Fordham Road to buy jewelry, clothes and household appliances and attend the movies.
You bought a slice of pizza AND a soda for $1.00.
You still don’t understand why people are crazy enough to drive to the Stadium for a Yankee game, when you can take the 4 or the D train.
You know that Riverdale is really the Bronx.
You know how to get on a bus using the rear door.
You have never been to the Statue of Liberty or the Empire State Building.
You know that the Bronx is the best borough of all, except for maybe Manhattan……maybe.
In high school, you cruised the strip on Central Ave in Yonkers. You had to take city buses and/or the subway to get to high school, unless you went to Spellman and you got your own special bus.
Your mother would yell your name out the window when it was time to come home.
You played stick ball and stoop ball.
Jaywalking is imaginary. It is an important skill you were taught when learning how to cross the street.
You knew New Jersey sucked before the phrase came into vogue…..
You have a great sense of humor.
During the summer, you went to the public park to play in the sprinklers.
You know that all people from places outside of the Bronx don’t know what they missed out on — it’s the only borough with The (‘da) in its name!

And..you know you’re from the Bronx if this email made you a little nostalgic, and you wish you could go back and do it all over again, but you know that it will never be the same again for the rest of your life!!

You were privileged to have been there at the right time and place!!!

When Your Feet Hit the Floor in the Morning
Satan Shudders and Says,
“Oh No, She’s Awake”
