JBlogger: Lynn, Erin (MC2010?) is interested in food reform

Public Appeal
July 24, 2008

Manhattan College is a fairly small school with students hailing from a wide variety of demographics. On campus, interest in food reform happens to be concentrated within a very small minority of students. Fortunate to have found each other at all, our little Fair Trade/Food Reform coalition decided, upon organizing, that gaining public appeal and educating our peers would be our first challenge.

No Trader Joe’s For Riverdale

By Candice M. Giove

The specialty grocery chain Trader Joe’s has no plans for Riverdale, though many speculated that the unique shop would seek retail space at the site of the new Manhattan College parking facility at West 242nd Street and Broadway.

“At this time I do not have a location in the next two years in that area,” said Trader Joe’s spokeswoman Alison Mochizuki.

Initially, Manhattan College planned to partner with Pathmark, but chain’s financial woes collapsed the deal.

Tom,

Just out of curiosity, is there to be an online offering? Or is it print only?

I’d have suspected that there would be some announcement preceding the email.

If all you have is a book, it’s easy to be a throwback. :-) And, people, who want the info, have to take it how it is offered. Hobson’s choice. (I wonder how much that ‘throwback’ has cost the College in forgone development opportunities? One will never know.)

Unfortunately, Plaxo, Cardscan, Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, and others have demonstrated that the “book” is not the way to consume this type of information. I have an FDU account that knock my socks off. It’s not a book; it one of these new fangled things called a “website”. You may have heard of them. :-) Manhattan has had some in the past.

OK, I’ll shut up now and pass the word that it’s legit.

[JR: Just noting for the record, the original email was identified as SPAM by Yahoo, Google, and my own service provider 1AND1. So, and it really did visually look "Nigerian" with the text and poor formatting. Added to the fact that it came into me on a 'wrong' email account, the warning bells were going off. Especially since there was no announcement from HQ. If you missed your email, you may want to check your spam folder. I have no idea what the plan is, so you have to look to HQ for further information. My limited knowledge is exposed here at Jasper Jottings; so don't ask me. If you get more information and care to share, I'd be happy to pass it along.]

Subject: Fw: A Quarter too much- A modern day parable

A MODERN DAY PARABLE

Several years ago, a new preacher moved to Houston,Texas. Some weeks after he arrived, he had occasion to ride the bus from his home to the downtown area. When he sat down, he discovered that the driver had accidentally given him a quarter too much change. As he considered what to do, he thought to himself, “You’d better give the quarter back. It would be wrong to keep it.” Then he thought, “Oh, forget it, it’s only a quarter. Who would worry about this little amount? Anyway, the bus company gets too much fare; they will never miss it.

Accept it as a ‘gift from God’ and keep quiet.”

When his stop came, he paused momentarily at the door, then he handed the quarter to the driver and said, “Here, you gave me too much change. The driver with a smile replied, “Aren’t you the new preacher in town? I have been thinking lately about going to worship somewhere. I just wanted to see what you would do if I gave you too much change. I’ll see you at church on Sunday”.

When the preacher stepped off of the bus, he literally grabbed the nearest light pole, held on, and said, “Oh God, I almost sold your Son for a quarter.”

Our lives are the only Bible some people will ever read. This is a really almost scary example of how much people watch us as Christians and will put us to the test!

Always be on guard and remember (as I try to remember) that you carry the name of Christ on your shoulders when you call yourself “Christian.”
