POSITRACTION: Bold defiance in Nazi Paris

Bold defiance in Nazi Paris By Barbara Mellor
Translator of Resistance: Memoirs of Occupied France

Notre Guerre, Souvenirs de Résistance, Agnès Humbert, 1946.
The listing on French eBay didn’t give much clue as to the treasure that lay in store.
Agnes Humbert’s secret journal was first published in 1946

Neither title nor author meant anything to me. But a memoir of the French Resistance published so soon after the war and – most intriguingly – written by a woman, might be worth a couple of euros.

When it arrived, Notre Guerre – its evocative cream-coloured cover darkened with age, its blotting-paper pages roughly cut – exhaled the atmosphere of wartime Paris. There was no preamble, no introduction. As I started to read, I was plunged directly into the Parisians’ agonized anticipation of the arrival of the German army in their beloved city in June 1940.

[JR: We continue to learn what good people did to resist evil. Hopefully, our challenges, or at least mine, will be little ones. Franz Jägerstätter comes to mind. And, all the ones we don’t know. When we are presented with evil, either personally or by our government, do we, as Jaspers, have huevos to stand up and “just say no”? It so much easier to “just go along to get along”. Like the line from a “man for all seasons”?]

*** begin quote ***

The Duke of Norfolk: Oh confound all this. I’m not a scholar, I don’t know whether the marriage was lawful or not but dammit, Thomas, look at these names! Why can’t you do as I did and come with us, for fellowship!

Sir Thomas More: And when we die, and you are sent to heaven for doing your conscience, and I am sent to hell for not doing mine, will you come with me, for fellowship?

A non-governmental organization has gotten involved, voicing its concerns about what it calls child trafficking and an abandoned child. Manji’s attorney is a famous human rights lawyer, who has offered her services pro bono. The judge asks, his voice trembling: “Which law forbids surrogacy?” The NGO attorney replies, his voice firm: “Which law permits surrogacy?” The problem is that there is no law, merely guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, which legalize surrogacy.

In the end, the court rules that Manji may remain in the care of her grandmother, for the time being, and the case is adjourned until mid-September. It appears that Manji is stuck in India, the country that was only meant to produce her.

You have to empathize with the baby in this story. How screwed up we get when we stray from His “original intent”. Throw in primal human needs, poverty, and the ulimate wild card screw up gooferment!

JEmail: McEneney, Mike (MC1953) reports in after the Retreat

From: McEneney, Mike (MC1953)

Date: September 25, 2008 12:19:27 AM EDT

To: “Jasperfjohn Reinke”

Subject: Retreat

Dear John,

A quick report on last weekends retreat at the Passionist Retreat Center in Riverdale. About 60 men attended. The theme was Gratitude and the 4 speakers were outstanding. Friday nights speaker was Bob Baughman, V.P. Mandkind Corporation whose topic was Why Aren’t We More Grateful. He gave a very powerful talk that led to interesting discussion groups later.

Saturday morning, Brother Ray Meagher, FSC spoke about “Gratitude: Vocational Vitality” which had the groups attention for the entire presentation. Brother teaches in the School of Education and it was evident why he is so well liked by his students,

Saturday afternoon, my brother Ed led a round table type discussion : Laymen’s Introduction to Scripture and Prayer.

Ed explained what some parishes are doing in setting up Men’s Ministries that meet early on Saturday mornings to study and discuss scripture. In some parishes as many as 60 men take part. Many men found the idea of attending such a program interesting.

Msgr. Dermot Brennan’s, former pastor of St. Patrick’s in Yorktown., topic was Developing An Attitude of Gratitude, which demonstrated that he has not lost a step in his preaching skills. Even after a long day and dinner he kept everyone awake and attentive.

Fr. Paul Fagan, the Retreat Director, delivered the final presentation, Staking Our Life on God’s Promises with Gratitude, was the perfect end to a great Retreat.

I should report that on Saturday, after Confessions, we had Mass at which Father Paul and Father Michael, administered the Sacrament of the sick to those who wished to participate.

All in all a great weekend to take stock of our relationship with God.

Sorry that all of you could not join us!

Mike

[JR: Thanks for the report. Usually I'd try to make a joke, but sounds like there were serious men doing serious work. Quietly. Courageously. Reverently. Nothing to joke about there. But, most importantly did you get us more readers? :-) After all, priorities are priorities. Seriously, thanks for all you do for Jottings. So what's the date for next year? Never too early to start publicizing.]

Dear John,

Thanks for your considered response to my thoughts on the controversy over Speaker Pelosi’s remarks. I see that she and the Archbishop of SF are going to have a meeting. It will be interesting to see what comes out of that.

I’m not sure why your system(?) brings me up as class of ‘75. While now I might appreciate being three years younger, I am a member of the class of 1972.

I don’t know if you picked up this link to a story in the NY Times last week – that featured an MC connection. In response to the Republican’s bashing of “community organizers” on Wednesday there was a profile of people who were community organizers in the Bronx in the 1970’s. One of them was Lois Harr who is now the Director of Campus Ministry and Social Action at alma mater.

As always, thanks for your efforts.

Superintendent praises Catholic education
By Randi Weiner The Journal News • September 24, 2008

GOSHEN – Since taking over this month as district superintendent for 35 Catholic schools in five counties, Mary Jane Daley has seen the inside of her office only rarely.

Instead, she’s been visiting the Catholic elementary schools in Rockland, Orange, Dutchess, Sullivan and Ulster counties, working on the evaluations of nearly 20 principals, which are due this fall, holding regional administrators meetings and arranging for curriculum training for teachers. Her territory encompasses more than 3,000 square miles, she estimated.
