Good Afternoon F. John,

The 18 Jan 2209 issue of Jasper Jottings got tagged by the IEEE aliasing service as possible SPAM; the X-headers inserted by the aliasing service look like this:

{Extraneous Deleted}

The 21 Dec 2008 issue also got tagged by IEEE, with the following X-headers:

{Extraneous Deleted}

My e-mail client, Eudora 7.1.0.9 gave these 2 issues a Junk score of 99 versus the typical score of 40 to 49 that usually gets assigned to JJ.

Here is an example of the X-headers for a non-tagged issue of JJ:

{Extraneous Deleted}

Regards,

Rich

[JR: Thanks, Rich. Not much I can do about it. Yahoo sends them out and, if IEEE doesn't recognize them as a "trusted sender", the messages are going to score high on the routine spam tests. Argh! Thanks for letting me know. What would be an interesting experiment, is for you to sign up for the RSSFWD on the weekly distribution and compare the "pass rate". I could start a group that just sends a URL to the weekly issue, but that seems unnecessary. Comments?]

All the people whose homes we worked on were already believers. However among the other teams that stayed at the Galveston Bible Church where we were staying was a group of young people from Manhattan College who were all Catholics. This was very unusual. They found out about EFCA Crisis Response through the Internet. God gave us opportunity to witness and share our testimonies with them -one and one, and also during the morning devotion time. They were extremely receptive and actually they were the ones who first approached us with questions concerning our beliefs. The conversations about the Lord and the Bible that I personally had with some of them were very rewarding. Wonderful seeds were planted. Many of them testified that this trip was a life changing experience for them.

It never ceases to amaze me the lessons and experiences that God gives me each time I go on these outreaches. While I go with the intention to bless others, I myself always return being blessed instead.

Looking forward to praying with you tomorrow night.

Charmaine

W. WARREN FENLEY, 86
Police sergeant coached at Farrell and Moore

*** begin quote ***

STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE — W. Warren (Mick) Fenley, 86, of Toms River, N.J., a Staten Island native who came out of the Marines at the end of World War II to play on the original NBA version of the Boston Celtics, died yesterday in Community Medical Center, Toms River.

Born and raised in Port Richmond, he lived in Castleton Corners before moving to Toms River in 1989.

Mr. Fenley started playing basketball on the playgrounds of West Brighton. A graduate of Port Richmond High School, he helped lead the school to the semifinals of PSAL city playoffs. Named All-City, he went to Manhattan College in the Bronx and played in the National Invitation Tournament.

He then served in the U.S. Marines from 1946 to 1948. Due to his two-year degree in physical education, he went into the service as a sergeant and became a drill instructor on Parris Island, South Carolina. He met his wife of 62 years, the former Anne Gillis, as a fellow sergeant.

Without a college draft, Mr. Fenley, who played some basketball during his time in the Marines, was able to join the Celtics roster. The 6-foot-3 forward usually started.

Largely considered one of the Island’s greatest home-grown pros, Mr. Fenley played one year in the inaugural season of the National Basketball Association.

After leaving the Celtics, he played for a professional team in Vermont, and then returned to the Island and joined the New York City Police Department. Mr. Fenley began his 20-year career as a police officer at Manhattan’s Ninth Precinct. He was later assigned to the 120th Precinct in St. George, and retired as a sergeant from the 123rd Precinct in Tottenville.

He went on to coach at Monsignor Farrell and Moore Catholic high schools and was credited with building up the athletic department at Moore Catholic.

Mr. Fenley was honored by the Boston Celtics during a halftime ceremony in 1996 in Boston to celebrate the NBA’s 50th anniversary.

“We were blessed to have this great man as our father,” said his sons, Bill and Steve.

“I first met Mick as a 23-year-old assistant coach and new teacher at Monsignor Farrell,” said Angelo Aponte, Secretary of the New York State Senate. “It was extraordinary good luck for me to be involved with someone like Warren at that time in my life. He taught me about relationships with players and how to keep the job of teacher and coach in balance.”

Mr. Fenley was inducted to the Old-Timers Hall of Fame; the Moore Catholic High School Hall of Fame and the Staten Island Hall of Fame. He enjoyed playing tennis at the Hillside Swim Club in Bulls Head and playing golf with his sons and grandchildren.

Mr. Fenley was a former parishioner of St. Rita’s R.C. Church, Meiers Corners, and a parishioner of St. John’s R.C. Church, Manchester, N.J.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, the former Anne Gillis; two sons, Bill and Steve; two sisters, Genieve Thompson and Shirley Magnussen, and four grandchildren.

The funeral will be Wednesday from the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Rita’s R.C. Church, Meiers Corners. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery, West Brighton.

Twelve Manhattan College students and I just got back yesterday from a week in New Orleans. We painted houses, delivered welcome baskets to seniors who are just moving back in after Katrina, and made a punch list for the plumbers working on another senior housing complex damaged in the storm.

So I’m spending MLK day recovering from a week of service, and thinking hard about HOW MUCH MORE HELP the people of New Orleans need — from the new administration, and from all of us. I’m thinking about the next time I can organize a trip down to New Orleans.

But I’m An Accountant Who Talks To Fat Ladies!

*** begin quote ***

This is the article referred to in my newsletter of January 20, 2009. Yes, I know it is a bit of a long post. It’ll keep you from surfing for porn.

But I’m An Accountant Who Talks To Fat Ladies!

It was October 1984 and I was selecting classes for my final college semester. Constitutional Law and Civil Liberties. Looks interesting; fits into my schedule; I can blow out of campus by noon (my criteria for class selection). How difficult can that class be? After all I’m an accounting major.

Hah! Seems that Constitutional Law and Civil Liberties is the last class taken by Government Majors to earn their degree. As a quick aside, let’s just say this was not an easy semester and the hardest I ever worked for an “A” grade.

Midway through the semester, spring 1985, we were given an assignment. Students were paired up to deliver a five minute presentation of a case previously decided by the Supreme Court of the United States. One student was given the majority opinion; the other the dissenting opinion. Now to be honest I do not remember the case I was assigned, the partner I was assigned, or which side of the decision I needed to defend. That information is irrelevant and probably forever blocked from my mind for a reason.

I read the case. I wrote up my presentation. I practiced it in front of the mirror. I practiced it in front of my family. I stood in the cafeteria in front of my business major friends and practiced. I was psyched. I was prepared. I was motivated. I was ready. This was going to be fun. This accounting major was about to declare a victory.

8:00 AM that day. Sitting in my seat the stomach is turning at warp speed. I’m nauseous. I am hoping Professor Grant – I remember her name! – was abducted or hit by a bus on the way to class. Nope, the smiling, perky, prematurely gray professor walked into the room. #%*$

Just pick me and get this over with I thought. Nope. She chose another pair to be first. Is this what death row feels like?

Finally after what seemed longer than waiting for Santa to arrive on Christmas Eve, it was my turn. I step to the front of the room. I look out at what seemed like 23,000 pairs of eyes staring at me. I open my mouth. Words start coming out. The looks of horror, shock, and hysterics on the faces of my professor and my classmates were something I can still vividly see.

Now if you’re old enough you may remember a commercial for FEDEX with the world’s fasting talking man. If you’re not old enough, I hate you. Just kidding – but go to YouTube or Google and use search terms FEDEX, fast talking man and watch the video. But I digress.

Yes, a five minute presentation, perfectly crafted and timed, was just delivered in about forty seconds. I vowed never to speak in public again.

Today you can find me at http://richdigirolamo.com/. But more importantly, thanks to Professor Grant, the Class of 1985 Government Majors at Manhattan College, my friends at Continental Grain Company, Mikki Williams, Scott “Q” Marcus, Christie Ward, NSA and all the “Skinnies” at Weight Watchers; you helped lead me to a path and into a career that has me jumping up out of bed in the morning!
