A Reflection

Walter Ineson, our dear friend and colleague, was a charter member of the Boys from the 1st Hole Golf League which formed in 1992. For seventeen years, he served as the league’s official score keeper and as a member of the executive board. Engineers like Walter are highly skilled professionals who strive to make the world a better place. He was always able to use his organizational and planning skills to make our lives easier and more meaningful, whether he was golfing, fundraising for numerous charities, or enjoying the company of his loving wife, family, and friends.

Walter was well-known for his dedication, fairness, honesty, and rationality, especially when important decisions were needed in league or tourney play. Leading 36 or so diverse and independent peers in an amateur golf league is no easy task. Yet, leadership does constitute service to others and Walter was a wonderful leader who modeled essential values such as care, and concern, and connectedness, as well as an understanding of the common good.

Walter was also a superb golfer, committed to the process of excellence while stroking countless shots and putts on the Dunwoodie Golf Course driving range and putting green. He loved to learn and share new things about driving, chipping, and putting, always seeking better ways to play a game where winning is virtually impossible.

Much like the legendary Bagger Vance, he knew that golfers can’t beat a course or really win – we can only play the game, accept our own human shortcomings, and deal with the frustrating realities of sandtraps and undulating greens.

Most importantly, Walter was a man who understood love, affection, and camaraderie. He loved his wife and family, showed deep affection for his friends, and enjoyed spending downtime with his golfing buddies. He smiled easily, forgave quickly, tolerated and modified our egocentrism, and always volunteered to help one person or another without complaint or a need for recognition. His abilities were exemplary in the honored traditions of public discourse and storytelling.

In another month, league play will resume at the Dunwoodie Golf Course. When you get to the 18th tee which is high on a Yonkers hill, hit your drive well, remember Walter, and watch the ball as it gently flies toward heaven.
