Dear John,
My recollection is that the two Manhattan players involved were Henry (Hank) Poppe and Jack Byrnes. I remember Byrnes driving a white Ford convertible at the time. I believe that Poppe held the record for the longest set shot in the old Garden, and Byrnes was a standout Ball handler. I believe that it was Poppe, who had graduated, who tried to get Junius to join in the scheme. I am not sure if Byrnes had graduated as well.
I am sure some of the other old timers will correct me or, at the least, add to the report.
Best,
Mike
[JR: Hmmm, so the article was correctif your memory is good.]
