EDENTON — The principal at John A. Holmes High School will be leaving at the end of June.
William “Bill” Moore, Holmes principal the past four years, tendered his letter of resignation on March 23. His last day of work for the Edenton-Chowan Schools will be Tuesday, June 30.
In the letter, Moore didn’t give any reason for his resignation.
He said he was “proud of the accomplishments of my team during the last four years.”
“I remain committed to always providing the best education for high school students so that they are successful in the work force and/or higher education programs,” he added.
In an e-mail to The Chowan Herald, Edenton-Chowan Schools Superintendent Allan Smith said Moore “has been an asset to the Edenton-Chowan Schools and has accomplished a great deal in his four years with us. We wish him all the best in the future.”
Moore outlined some of those accomplishments in a farewell letter to Holmes staff.
He said he was proud of the expansion of the advanced placement courses program that currently offers eight classes. Three others — AP Spanish, AP Music Theory and AP World History — are scheduled to begin in the fall.
He also praised Holmes staff for their efforts to increase community involvement in the school system, and for their dedication to their profession.
“Our staff has become recognized for the quality of education we offer daily,” Moore wrote. “We have had staff recognized as Chowan County Teachers of the Year for the past two years.”
One of those teachers went on to be honored as Regional Teacher of the Year, making it to the final nine teachers considered for N.C. Teacher of the Year. The other teacher was named N.C. JROTC Instructor of the Year and will compete for the national title this year.
According to Kerri Albertson, school/community relations director for the Edenton-Chowan Schools, Moore retired from the U.S. Army, where his highest rank was lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve.
An educator since 1986, Moore worked as a teacher, assistant principal and principal before coming to Holmes. He holds a bachelor’s degree in social studies from Fordham University and two masters’ degrees — a master of science in social studies from Iona College and a master of science in school administration from Manhattan College.
