POSITRACTION: Everything is on the inet

Yiddish Literature Goes Online

From the Internet Archive Post by Brewster Kahle:

*** begin quote ***

Over ten thousand Yiddish texts, estimated as over 1/2 of all the published works in Yiddish, are now online based on the work of the National Yiddish Book Center, volunteers, and the Internet Archive. We are excited that a literature of a people is being made available.

*** end quote ***

Is the internet the Library at Alexandria of modern times? Or the Tower of Babble.

Jottings wouldn’t be possible without it.

Positives and Negatives?

Covenant coach who beat Dallas Academy 100-0 is fired
06:04 AM CST on Monday, January 26, 2009
By BARRY HORN / The Dallas Morning News

*** begin quote ***

The Covenant School fired its girls basketball coach Sunday, the same day he posted a message on a youth basketball Web site saying he disagreed with school officials who had publicly apologized for the team’s 100-0 victory over Dallas Academy.

*** and ***

Grimes said in his Sunday post that his team stopped applying full-court defensive pressure after the score reached 25-0 three minutes into the game, then dropped into a relatively benign zone defense and began resting its starters in favor of its three bench players.

*** and ***

She said the parents of the team’s eight players met with school officials Saturday and outlined three goals for the program:

“We want to represent Christ with the highest respect, we don’t want to humiliate anyone ever and we want our students to be enthusiastic in everything they do.”

*** end quote ***

Funny as it sounds, when my wife was coaching 6-8 grade girls basketball, she ran up against teams that didn’t have a clue.

She, however, was a sharp enough coach to realize watching the other team warm up, that they were clueless. A point guard who dribbled head down. a “5” who was shorter than her shortest guard, or even a coach who was an inexperienced mother who was doing it so the girl could have a team.

It never got to that point.

She had 15 girls on her team. (At that age level, she felt it was supposed to be fun for everyone.) But, she MANAGED the game. (Something that coach in the story missed.) Starters started until the first dead ball. Then, the second team went in for a while. (After they scored a few times!) Then it was the third strings turn.

But, alas, even they were better than the other team. One of our kids, who could barely reach the basket, drilled one from 12 feet.

First team went back in with ORDERS to do a Clemson style stall. (It was good practice for them. Later in the season, it was used to run out the clock in a tough game.)

In life, you have remember what the REAL objectives are. Embarrassing our fellow human being is really NOT doing the Lord’s work.

And, as many pro sports franchises have learned, it motivates your opponent next time.

Manhattan College’s Holocaust Resource Center Presents Music Out Of Oppression

Event features composer Ronald Senator, pianist Miriam Brickman and soprano Marni Nixon

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Manhattan College Holocaust Resource Center will host a special program, Music Out of Oppression, on Monday, April 6 at 7:30 p.m. in Smith Auditorium. The event, which is co-sponsored by the College’s department of fine arts, is free and open to the public. The program also commemorates Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, which is April 21.

Music Out of Oppression features composer and lecturer Dr. Ronald Senator, his wife, pianist Miriam Brickman, and soprano Marni Nixon. The night includes a discussion and presentation of examples from Senator’s Holocaust Requiem. Brickman and Nixon will perform piano pieces, soprano solos and cabaret songs written in or about the concentration camps.

Senator was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in the United States after the New York City premiere of Holocaust Requiem under composer Lukas Foss in 1990. He has composed six operas and musicals on texts by notable modern authors, including Anthony Burgess, Peter Porter and Ursula Vaughan Williams. Senator was a founding member of the Montserrat Composers’ Association for Sacred Music and the founding director of the National Association of Music Theatre in the United Kingdom.

Brickman is active throughout the world as a chamber musician and a soloist in many orchestras, including the Moscow Philharmonic and Brooklyn Philharmonic. She has performed in Town Hall, Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York, as well as elsewhere in the United States, England, France, Czech Republic, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. Since 1991, she has been invited to Russia four times for solo, chamber and orchestral concerts, including several concerts that featured music by her husband.

Nixon’s career includes opera, chamber and symphony, oratorio soloist and Grammy-nominated recordings both popular and classical. She is the winner of four Emmys for best actress on her children’s TV show Boomerang, and she earned two Gold records for Songs From Mary Poppins and Mulan. Nixon was also the singing voice of Deborah Kerr, Natalie Wood and Audrey Hepburn in the motion pictures and on the soundtracks of The King and I, An Affair to Remember and West Side Story.

For more information about this event, please contact Dr. Jeff Horn, director of the Holocaust Resource Center at Manhattan College, at (718) 862-7129 or jeff.horn@manhattan.edu.

The history of the Holocaust Resource Center dates back to 1996, when discussions among concerned faculty and administrators at the College and in the Riverdale community led to its founding with the mission to promote Catholic-Jewish dialogue and educate future generations about the Holocaust. The center inaugurated its Visiting Scholars Program the next year, and in 2006, an additional annual lecture was added to the series that focuses on genocides other than the Holocaust.
