JEmail: McEneney, Mike (MC1953) was watching the parade too

From: “McEneney, Mike (MC1953)”
Date: March 17, 2009 11:07:19 PM EDT
To: “Jasperfjohn Reinke”
Subject: Parade

Dear John,

For the second year in a row, I did not march. The first time I marched in the parade was in 1943 with St. Barnabas Elementary School Band (I carried the flag!). After that I marched with Mount Saint Michael and than Manhattan. After a few years off for the Army and other obligations, I started marching in front of the NY State Courts Pipers and that lasted until two years ago. That is a long way of telling you that is why I was watching the parade on Channel 4., and not marching. At one point, one of the commentators mentioned that a Pipe Band from Iceland was formed by a young lady, who was a Piper in the Manhattan College Band, when she graduated and returned to Iceland. Unfortunately I did not pickup her name.

You never know what a Jasper will do, or where!

   Mike

[JR: I heard that but was distracted seeing if I knew anyone. :-) I was sad to hear that Brother President was looking forward to retirement. It's a big change. Change never seems to be for the better.]

JHQ: Three-day celebration of College’s founder

The Faith Club Authors To Speak At Manhattan College
Event highlights three-day celebration of College’s founder.

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Authors Ranya Idliby, Suzanne Oliver and Priscilla Warner will speak about their acclaimed book The Faith Club in Manhattan College’s Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers on Wednesday, April 15 at 6:30 p.m. The event, which is free and open to the public, highlights the College’s De La Salle Days, an annual celebration of Manhattan’s founder, John Baptist de La Salle.

The Faith Club: A Muslim, A Christian, A Jew – Three Women Search for Understanding, was written by three mothers of different faiths who initially convened to write a book for their children that would highlight the connections among their religions. Only after realizing that their differences lead to misunderstandings did the trio write a memoir of spiritual reflections that allows readers to eavesdrop on their private conversations, provocative discussions and often controversial opinions and conclusions.

A Palestinian Muslim, Idliby grew up in both Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and McLean, Va. She graduated from the school of foreign service at Georgetown University before studying at the London School of Economics.

Oliver, an Episcopalian, was raised in the suburban Midwest before moving to New York City, where she spent several years as a financial journalist at Financial World, Forbes and SmartMoney.com. She met Idliby at their daughters’ kindergarten school bus stop in September 2001.

Warner studied Torah, Jewish history and Hebrew as a youth in Rhode Island. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, she became an advertising art director in Boston, met her husband and relocated to New York City. Inspired by her two sons, Warner began to write and illustrate children’s books, and authored two dozen picture books, two novels and two screenplays before a telephone call led to the partnership with Idliby and Oliver.

The three authors have been featured on NBC’s Today Show, as well interviewed by CNN, Hallmark Channel’s The New Morning Show and National Public Radio’s The Diane Rehm Show.

De La Salle, designated by the Catholic Church as the Patron Saint of Teachers, founded the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. He formed a community of religious Brothers who devote themselves as teachers to work for the well-being of the children of artisans and the underprivileged. The Order founded Manhattan College in 1853.
