NORWICH – A few years after we graduated from college, one of my best friends went to Brooklyn Law. He used to call me late at night when he finished studying. (As I was two time zones away in Colorado, I think I was probably the only person he knew who was up as late with the exception of his classmates.) Every time we talked, he’d tell me that he thought I should go to law school, too. I’d laugh at him and tell him he was out of his mind. But secretly, the idea appealed to me. I just didn’t want to admit it.

As it turned out, it wasn’t John (who is now, incidentally, an assistant district attorney in the Bronx) who finally gave me a sneak peek at what it’s like to be a lawyer. That dubious honor went to another Manhattan College grad: Michael Ferrarese of Lee, Emerson and Ferrarese in Norwich.

Attorney James Kosch of Allendale, a partner in LeClairRyan of Newark, was a young lawyer at McCarter English in Newark about 25 years ago when a senior member of that firm decided someone ought to “learn this environmental stuff.” Kosch was the youngest guy at the table, and the senior member pointed to him and said, “You!”

Since then he’s developed a specialty for cases related to environmental issues, including toxic-tort defense, “green” construction, alternative energy and nanotechnology.

Last year he joined the Newark office of national law firm LeClairRyan. It wasn’t the first time his path crossed that of LeClairRyan founder Gary LeClair. They had faced each other on the football field in high school, when LeClair played for Northern Valley-Old Tappan and Kosch played for Hawthorne.

Kosch, 53, has been involved in numerous community organizations in Bergen County, including serving as president of the Allendale Recreation Commission and vice president of the board of trustees of the John Harms Center for the Arts.

He spoke with The Record recently about his football connection, issues in environmental law, and his all-time favorite lawyer movies. (Interview edited and condensed for space.)

[JR: Networking note, he and the boss went to high school together. And, people snicker at my continued attempts to link Jaspers together. Schools are your best way to make connections that last a lifetime. imho!]

[JR: Jerry, we'll statistically 52% might want one. But just as folks complain when you skewer the politicians, I'm sure 48% will complain too. Impressive result. I'm not for honoring any politician given my stance on gooferment. Even the Dead Old White Guys were wrong thinking they could keep the tyrants locked down with a piece of paper. Lysander Spooner. Hope you make a million anyway. And, as always, I'm a cheerleader for anything Jaspers do. No matter how misguided. :-) My book being my most notable stupidity. ROFL. Good luck with it.]

[JR: Note about format. I've decided, subject to the feedback of the readership, to stop copying the email headers in the message. A lot of work for little value. Comments?]
