K. Nicole Bell
Owner – Cosmetic & Laser Dental Studio, PLLC

Nicole Bell is the sole owner of a specialty dental practice with three locations in the New York area and takes pride in her pursuit to restore smiles with a holistic and conservative approach. The three locations include: Freeport, Rockville Centre and midtown Manhattan. Each location is unique, but its style of service and dedication to treatment remains the same. Dr. Bell is a cosmetic dentist certified to treat with lasers and performs many procedures without the use of a drill or anesthetics. She also has extensive training in advanced surgical and implantology. She is an attending doctor at Catholic Medical Centers hospitals where she is also credentialed to administer O.R. cases.

The Rockville Centre office offers dental spa services using specialized sedation techniques and relaxation methods and integrates traditional and non-traditional dental and spa treatments for the ultimate experience. Some of the amenities include virtual reality eyewear; beverages, cordials; Starbucks coffee; temple massage; reflexology and more.

Dr. Bell is a Long Island native and graduate of Baldwin High School. She attended Manhattan College on a full scholarship and earned a Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree at Meharry Medical College with full honors. In 2002, she completed a general practice residency at Washington Hospital Center in Washington DC, where she developed her specialty training. It was then that she decided to work closely with the special needs population, whose medical conditions and medications require knowledge in sedating drug interactions and behavioral management techniques. Dr. Bell has established a non-profit organization, The Global Healing Foundation, which will donate medical and dental services locally and abroad, beginning its missions in India in 2009.

She serves as Director of the Nassau County Dental Society, is a member of the American Dental Association, the New York State Dental Association and the Meharry Alumni Association. She is a member of Long Island Elite, Alpha Kappa Alpha Inc. Theta Iota Omega chapter of Nassau County, and the Suffolk County Forensic Dental Society. Dr. Bell volunteers her time to a host of charities including Give Kids a Smile.

Robert Vitelli
Director of Development – Long Island Gay & Lesbian Youth

Since 2001, Robert Vitelli has been the Director of Development for Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth, a non-profit organization dedicated to addressing homophobia as a social problem to create a safer and healthier Long Island for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) youth, as well as its affiliate partner agencies – the Long Island Gay Lesbian Bisexual and Transgender Community Center (The Center), and Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE Long Island).

Vitelli has led significant program development efforts to expand LIGALY’s work with local schools and has participated in numerous advocacy efforts on the local and state-wide level to increase statewide funding for GLBT services. He developed LIGALY’s Safe Schools Initiative, a comprehensive effort to address homophobia-related harassment and bullying in schools; the National Coming-Out Day School Awareness Campaign implemented in 35 Long Island high schools with more than 30,000 student and educator participants; the Long Island Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) Network to help youth and educators start more than 40 gay-straight alliance clubs as after-school programs dedicated to creating a safe and supportive space for GLBT youth and their friends; and has organized teachers and administrators with the Long Island Gay-Straight Educators Association (LIGSEA) to develop strategies for institutional change within schools. Vitelli’s contributions to creating safer schools for GLBT youth culminated in an academic work included in Gender and Education: An Encyclopedia, co-authored with an educator from a local middle school, which shares his challenges and successes in supporting GLBT youth in schools as a tool for other educators and activists.

He is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals – Long Island Chapter, an associate adjunct professor at Nassau Community College in the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, and has worked with the Interfaith Nutritional Network and the Special Olympics. Restaurant gets money back, despite cabbie
$5,000 | Woman finds it, tells driver — night gets ‘interesting’
June 14, 2009
BY MARY WISNIEWSKI Staff Reporter

The bag Ginny Narsete found on the back seat of the taxi bore the logo of a Mexican restaurant, but the contents “didn’t feel like a taco,” she said.

*** and ***

… she didn’t even consider keeping the money. She told the driver what she had found and asked him to take her to a police station so she could turn over the cash. But she said the cabdriver began acting strangely, insisting that the money should be taken to a cab stand, and drove Narsete around and around, running up the fare. “He wouldn’t let me out of the car,” Narsete said.

[JR: I love happy endings. Bet the taxi driver was sorely tempted. Sigh, finding cash, big temptation. Hope that I only find little amounts. Not sure I'm as "good" as this lady.]

Health Care You Can Believe In?

*** begin quote ***

A Modest Proposal

Before attempting to overhaul one-sixth of the U.S. Economy, why doesn’t the Obama Administration fix Medicare and Medicaid? Show us your stuff Mr. President. Not your charm, not your winning smile. The campaign is over. Prove that you can make these government programs work before you take on any more massive health care undertakings.

[JR: I'd add the VA into that "modest proposal"!]

Which of your coaches would really emphasize blocking out on rebounds?

Well, my first coach, in elementary school — he coached [four sports]. He was a busy guy [laughs]. So the college kids in my parish, they would work with us on stuff. They’d gone to Manhattan College, and they showed me the Mikan drill, and the importance of footwork. And some of the parents would help out in track and baseball.

PRAYERREQUESTED: Do we have a “headache” prayer?

*** begin quote ***

“Not like something bumped it; it just hurts” I grew a tad nervous since those two symptoms together are what they tell me to be on the lookout for

*** end quote ***

OK, Jaspers, we need some more specific “prayer action” for our fellow Jasper’s daughter.

Now as an injineer, the only headaches I’m familiar with were Prof Zia’s exams and hangovers, the prayers used for them — they usually ended with a lame promise “never again” — are probably not appropriate for this case. But, I’m sure you can find one that’s suitable for cute little girl who caught the … … “soiled” end of the stick. And, doesnt’ complain like I would.

May I have a “headache” prayer?

JNews: Schanberger, Fr. James Lawrence [MC1950] celebrates 60th jubilee

Maryknoll priest celebrates 60th jubilee
Father James Lawrence Schanberger
By Vince Fitzpatrick
Special to The Review

*** begin quote ***

Maryknoll Father James Lawrence Schanberger, a Baltimore native who encountered Blessed Mother Teresa during a priestly career that took him to Asia and South America, where he continues to minister, marked the 60th anniversary of his ordination June 11.

Raised in a Forest Park family that produced three Mercy Hospital nurses, a physician, a psychologist and an officer in the U.S. Air Force, Father Schanberger graduated from All Saints School in Forest Park.

From 1936-42, he attended St. Charles College, a former minor seminary in Catonsville. After studying at St. Mary’s Seminary, he entered the Maryknoll Seminary in New York in September 1943.

He began his Maryknoll novitiate in Bedford, Mass., in September 1944. He received a bachelor’s degree from Manhattan College in 1950 and earned a Masters of Arts in Christian Spirituality at Creighton University.

In 1953, Father Schanberger was assigned to the Maryknoll Agricultural School in Molina, Chile. From 1960-68, he served at Assumption Mary, a Maryknoll parish in Talcahuano, Chile. From 1968-74, he served as the regional superior of the new Maryknoll region of Venezuela and Colombia.

His mission gave him the blessing of giving priority service to the poor, the sick, the abandoned and marginalized. His parishioners struggled to raise families while confronting unemployment, drugs, alcoholism, divorce, teenage pregnancy and social unrest.

From 1974-79, he served as rector of the Maryknoll Major Seminary in New York.

In October 1979, Father Schanberger arrived in Calcutta, India, where he waited 14 months for a visa to Bangladesh.

While in Calcutta, in what he describes as the “high point of his mission,” he met Mother Teresa and assisted her work. He remains extremely grateful for the “the great blessing of working with her community in their efforts to serve the very poor and abandoned.”

From 1980-94, Father Schanberger served at the Holy Spirit parish in rural Tuital, Bangladesh.

In Bangladesh, he enjoyed the “wonderful experience of serving Catholic families and witnessing their desire to live in peace with and have respect for the Muslim and Hindu communities.”

Father Schanberger continues his mission today in a parish of 45,000 outside Santiago, Chile.

His life as a priest was celebrated in ceremonies at Maryknoll, N.Y., June 28-29. A Mass in his honor will also be celebrated at Stella Maris in Cockeysville July 19, at noon.

Fitzpatrick, the nephew of Father Schanberger, lives in Towson.
