“We play the song ‘1 and 9’ that Rich wrote. There are people in the audience that know all about the experience of hanging around 242nd Street under the train. A lot of Irish fans we have settled in Inwood, Washington Heights, and around Manhattan College in the seventies and eighties.

“We sing about them and their experience. Our neighbors and friends are in those songs.”

If the “1 and 9” song is the embodiment of the band’s spirit, then the following track captures the essence of seeing the band live:

“I had a rough night/to cap off a rough week/I woke up spitting blood and a couple of teeth/my swollen right hand ain’t got no more skin,” they sing on “Bare Knuckled Man.” “Whatever life throws at you, the booze will take away,” they advise on “The Liver Song,” a fantastic jug band ditty.

Like the city that birthed them, the songs on “1 and 9” offer a tasty musical melting pot of rock, folk, bluegrass and Irish traditional melodies, all served up with an attitude that would give a cranky Manhattan taxi driver a run for his money.

In fact, the original songs are so good that this reviewer would advise the band to dispense with parochial readings of trad songs like “The Parting Glass” on their next record. It’s the weakest cut in this collection, which is a testament to this great new CD of songs.

This is a standup group of public servants that keep us safe, so let’s hoist a pint to that! With the great songs on 1 and 9 and their ferocious live performances, Shilelagh Law keeps a love of Irish culture and music alive in Yonkers, Woodlawn, and all of Manhattan. I’ll drink to that as well!

For more information on tour dates and to sample their music, check out http://www.halfthebottle.com/

They will be playing the Brooklyn Irish Festival (Floyd Bennet Field on 3159 Flatbush Avenue) on June 27 and 28, along with Patty Smyth, the Wolfe Tones and the Pat McGuire band, and they can be found most Sunday nights hosting an open session at the Rambling House (4292 Katonah Avenue, Woodlawn).

“It’s madness in a pint,” jokes Kilkenny man and guitarist John Walsh. “It’s Irish music with an open attitude, or Irish music for the rest of us, if you like.”

POSITRACTION: Demolishes Wrong House

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,525876,00.html

Georgia Contractor Using GPS Coordinates, Not Street Address, Demolishes Wrong House
Thursday, June 11, 2009

*** begin quote ***

CARROLLTON, Ga. — Turns out GPS isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

A crew using coordinates from a global positioning system demolished a 60-year-old home in Carrollton earlier this week, but it was the wrong house. The home’s owner, Al Byrd of Atlanta, said he heard about the mistake when a neighbor called him to tell him the house he grew up in — along with his family heirlooms — had been destroyed and thrown into Dumpsters. No one was living in the house at the time. Byrd said his father built the house by hand in 1950.

Byrd said he is talking with an attorney but hasn’t made any decisions on what to do. He said he’s gotten an apology from the companies who made the mistake.

ENDNOTE: Assisted Suicide; a moral hazard

http://www.lifenews.com/bio2855.html

Washington Sees First Person Die Under Second-in-Nation Assisted Suicide Law
from LifeNews.com Pro-Life Headlines (Steven Ertelt)

*** begin quote ***

Olympia, WA (LifeNews.com) — Washington has now seen the first person die under state’s the second-in-the-nation law legalizing the practice of assisted suicide. A 66-year-old woman from Sequim named Linda Fleming died Thursday night after taking a lethal cocktail prescribed to her by a physician under the law.

*** end quote ***

It far above my pay grade to comment on this poor woman’ decision. Everyone sees things differently. I see this a failure of our society.

If you read the high points of the law, two docs have to guess that you have only six months to live. That seems presumptuous. From my personal dealings with the medical profession, they ain’t sure of what they are doing. That’s the “art” part of the expression “an art; not a science”.

We’ll never know how it might have worked out for this woman. All we can do is pray for her soul, the doc’s who make such a risky decision, and ours.

Ours cause we are on that slippery slope.

What’s next the depressed, those drawing from a bankrupt social security system, the “expensive patients”, babies with defects, or as in China girls.

Mess with His Plan at our own peril.

CARTOON: Breen, Jerry (MC1971) remembers stranglove

John: Here’s a new cartoon, about North Korea’s psycho dictator Kim Jong Il. Even though his country is the poorest nation in the world and his people are starving (human arms and legs have been seen for sale in his country’s meat markets), Kim has devoted his country’s resources to developing ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons. Now Japanese and U.S. intelligence agencies are predicting that he will launch a long-range missile (with a nuke?) toward Hawaii on around July 4th. Obviously, we would be forced to respond. Since Kim recently renounced the 1953 armistice that ended the Korean War, that war has actually officially resumed. So nobody should be surprised by the events of the coming weeks. Not if they’ve been paying attention to the news. – Jerry Breen ’71 www.newbreen.com
