JNews: Mercurio, John [MC????] has a dream

Mercurio remains optimistic about free baseball school

Not much has changed for John Mercurio in recent weeks. The Deerfield Beach resident still wants to open his free baseball school for kids, but he needs $1,000 to pay for field fees, another $1,000 for insurance and an additional $700 to buy equipment.

So far, no donations have been delivered to the baseball historian, who is looking to sign up 30 to 38 players who are going into their freshman year of high school.

{Extraneous Deleted}

A member of the 1957 Manhattan College team that won the Metropolitan Championship, Mercurio plans to keep records of the fastest time running the bases, the fastest time around one lap of the field, the most home runs and RBIs, highest batting average and most strikeouts by a pitcher. He needs 30 players on average to make his roster. That would allow him to field three teams with each made up of eight position players, a starting pitcher and one extra hurler.

{Extraneous Deleted}

Mercurio’s motto in baseball and in life is: Never make the same mistake twice. A physical education major with 60 consecutive years of baseball and softball playing experience, along with 20 years in the umpiring business, he is asking for donations to help foot the bill for his school.

All ballplayers from the Palm Beach and Broward County areas looking to help Mercurio continue his dream of teaching kids how to play baseball and get opening day under way are asked to write to Mercurio at 545 Trace Circle #101 Deerfield Beach, FL 33441.
