Lady Jaspers Recognized for Success In Classroom
Release: 07/13/2009
RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) has announced its 2008-09 Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll, and Manhattan College finished seventh among all Division I schools with a team GPA of 3.432 for the academic year. Manhattan was the only MAAC institution to make the top 25, and had the highest GPA of any team in the Eastern time zone.
The Lady Jaspers placed a league-high six players on the 2008-09 MAAC All-Academic Team. To be eligible for that award, student-athletes must have completed two semesters at their institution and boast a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher. In addition, seven members of the Manhattan women’s basketball squad had a cumulative GPA better than 3.40 at the conclusion of the 2009 spring semester.
This marks the second consecutive year in which Manhattan earned a place on the WBCA Academic Top 25. The Lady Jaspers ranked eighth in the nation with a team GPA of 3.43 in 2007-08. The No. 7 ranking is Manhattan’s highest in the 12-year history of the award.
All 341 Division I member schools are eligible for the Academic Honor Roll, provided they are nominated by a WBCA-member head coach. GPAs are calculated by dividing the number of quality points earned by each student-athlete each semester by the total number of credit hours earned by the team. Indiana State had a team GPA of 3.645 in 2008-09 to lead all Division I institutions.

[JR: Agreed. Applause is well-deserved. The objective of the college athlete should be education. In talking to students -- yes, they let me speak to students; stop laughing; as an example of what not to do and what happens when you get an index like mine -- I tell them as part of my "success for your generation" formula which includes: "(2) a life long interest in learning -- education -- a degree -- they can't take it away from you"! Unfortunately, some student athletes are defrauded by their schools. Glad to see that MC is a leader in this category. Hope that never changes. And, congrats to the women. Now where are the men?]
