JNews: Odd story mentions Kane, Ed [MC1951] and Harrington, Bill [MC1953]

[JR: Behind the scenes, I consult on what's suitable to share. This appeared to be just filler. Boy, was I surprised!]

Dear John,

Ed Kane, I believe, is a member of the Class of 1951 and Bill Harrington is a member of the Class of 1953. So there is no reason not to push it.

[JR: So we have a conflict. Did he graduate or not? And, if he didn't, it's interesting that two Jaspers were obviously close to and trusted by him. Sorry to have missed capturing his story. I think it would have been instructive and interesting. Another missed opportunity.

JEmail: Kevin Moore, Kevin (MC1980) reports on Br. Celestine Luke Salm

Dear CIC,

It is with sadness and a heavy heart the I write to inform you that I learned that that my uncle and long time Manhattan College professor Br. Celestine Luke Salm has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and has given six months to live. I am sure many of your readers have been taught by Br. Luke, who was a professor in the religion department for many, many years. He was also a residence director at both West Hill and Overlook. His professional accomplishments in the field of theology were many, and he had published several books including a biography of St. John Baptiste De La Salle, founder of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. This book has recently been made required reading for all faculty and staff of the College. Prayers on his behalf would be greatly appreciated by any and all inclined to do so.

[JR: Ouch! That is ... sad news indeed. Hard to find the right words. As one of the radio commercials I heard, "people don't come with expiration dates". I'm not convinced that the "witch doctors" are more accurate than weather forecasters or economists. I'd rank them just a smidgen above "politician's promises". Perhaps, we can find the his books on Amazon and post a link. Might make Brother smile to have his books climb on the popularity list. Isn't that the fourth of the "Prime Directive": Live, Laugh, Love, and Legacy? Prayers are on their way.]

JEmail: Apoldo, Lou (MC1963) chides my crit

Lou Apoldo commented on your status:

“John, your Curmudgeon Last Word in this week’s Jasper Jottings condeming the Church for failing to speak up against the erosion of our morals and values was probably a little too broad. I believe that the Traditionalists, like the Brothers of the Christian Schools at Manhattan College, have held the line to uphold the Church’s teachings, while the Progressives, like the Jesuits at Fordham, have yielded to the moral relativists and the politically correct to erode the Church’s teachings.”

# – # – #

Apoldo, Lou (MC1963)

[JR: Perhaps, but I think we can indict a whole generation of Church leadership, including the laity and the Irish Catholic politicians. We lost the battle to limit government to a tight little box and we failed to hold Catholic Politicians to high standards. JFK was an exemplar of the problem. I think that, when the "Decline and Fall of the American Empire" is written, the takeover of education by Dewey and Mann using the Prussian model will be the singular watershed event to our decline. It allowed the Secular Progressives to in one fell swoop to: dumb down the electorate, destroy religion by brainwashing the children in religious families, and simultaneously train the "cannon fodder / factory worker" population to led into war and welfare. And, the Church leadership allowed it to happen. And, I see no way to reverse the decline. Michael Jackson gets a national frenzy; Brian Bradshaw is unknown! Sigh. Any more and I'll be in an endnote. Thanks for the trigger.]

MFound: Gripe when MC is in session?

http://riverdalepress.com/full.php?sid=9238

Noon — Bar as bistro
An Beal Bocht, 445 W. 238th St.
718-884-7127

Public transit access: No. 1 train to West 328th Street, walk up the step street; Bx7 bus to the corner of Riverdale and West 238th Street, walk downhill

Cost: Full Irish breakfast, $12; basic hamburger with trimmings, $8

This Irish pub, with a name that means “The Poor Mouth” in Gaelic, is a neighborhood favorite. When Manhattan College is in session, locals often gripe that An Beal Bocht is too popular, especially with its Tuesday open mic series. With the college students gone for the summer, An Beal Bocht is once again left to the neighborhood, and area residents take full advantage of its outdoor seating. Bring a book and sit outside, but beware, the pub is on a sharply sloped street — so make sure to pick a sturdy chair. The pub is known for its lively evenings, but the Gaelic burger ($10) — with Irish bacon, cheddar cheese, and grilled onions — is worth a visit anytime.

An Beal Bocht is open from 10 a.m. to late.

JEmail: Dans, Peter E. (MC1957) liked this week’s effort

Hi John:

Thanks again for all your hard work in keeping Manhattan College alumni linked together. I loved the story about 90 year old Andy Neidnig. It would have been interesting to hear about the three times that he was almost killed during the Battle of the Bulge, but he was reticent about telling the stories. This was very typical of World War II veterans like my stepfather who spent half of the war at sea in the merchant marines on some very hazardous troop and supply runs but never talked about it. Nowadays with Twitter and cellphones, people can’t shut up about the most trivial and personal things in their lives.

I also was impressed by the accomplishments of the neuropathologist at the University of Rochester, Dr. Powers.

Finally, I must agree with your last words about the devastating effects of the failure of Catholic leadership on Catholic schools and religious orders. Sadly, it continues to this day.

Keep up the good work.

Best regards,
Peter E. Dans (’57)

[JR: Doctor Dans, Thanks for the high praise. I'm just the "sewer pipe" passing stuff along. We need some cub reporters to go capture that story before it escapes forever. As my book, CHURCH 10●19●62 demonstrates, any one can get anything in print. (Unlike your legitimate works.) At near zero cost. There's no reason for these stories to "disappear". I was always entranced by the FireFox series, where a bunch of college kids captured Americana right around them. Most of the WW2 vets I knew NEVER spoke of their personal story. Always about their friends. if at all. Hey, don't complain about twitter @jasperjottings is there too. Instantaneous Jasper news. No delay. :-) As I say, I am journalizing the success of my fellow alums. If I can't be a success, then let me chronicle others'. Sad, isn't' it. We let the gooferment stick it's nose in "charity", "education", "healthcare", and now we have a mess. I feel for posterity; we've made a mess of this. I'll try, but I'm looking to train a replacement. Those obits' Class Years are starting to get painfully close. Thanks for the "steam" to keep on going. Wife says my head barely fits thru the door now; you may have pushed it over the edge.]

Great stuff, John. I clicked on the link and found that he lists his e-mail and tells a little about himself on it. Go back and have a look and check out the “Good Samaritan.”

Most of you may look at my photos and are not sure of my intentions. I look for humor and irony first, but unfortunately life is full of sadness, and hence, seems to catch my attention as well. In the photos I take that fall into that category, I am not trying to ridicule or exploit. In fact, my intentions are exactly the opposite. We are programmed to look the other way and ignore unpleasant images or people, but I am in awe of how some people get by and live day to day whether it be by choice or not. These people amaze me and I applaud and appreciate all of them. -Vincent Rodriguez
