Mundelein left a legacy in the town that bears his name
  By Vincent Pierri | Daily Herald Staff

*** begin quote ***

According to an entry in the New Catholic Encyclopedia, it’s not surprising George William Mundelein had a town named in his honor. He accomplished much in his 67 years.

Born in 1872, he was the son of Francis and Mary Mundelein. They sent him to St. Nicholas School in Manhattan. He graduated from Manhattan College in 1889. After spending three years at St. Vincent’s Seminary in Pennsylvania, he moved to Rome and completed his studies at the Propaganda College. He was ordained in 1895 and said his first Mass at St. Peter’s tomb under St. Peter’s Basilica.

Returning to the states two years later, Mundelein was elevated to archbishop of Chicago in 1915. At 43 years old, he was the youngest archbishop in the United States.

McGowan, Kathleen [MC2002]

Volunteer Coordinator and Institutional Advancement Associate at The Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York

Education
    * Providence College
    * Manhattan College

As Volunteer Coordinator I oversee the entire volunteer process. I create volunteer opportunities in conjunction with program directors and outline specific procedures and guidelines for the volunteers.

As the Institutional Advancement Associate my major responsibility is to run The St. Nicholas Project – a year-round initiative that focuses its fundraising efforts during the Christmas Season. In addition, I also assist senior members of the department with special events. One unique opportunity that has developed over the past year is that I assist one of our major donors with his Foundation which helps support our food pantries throughout the City.

[JR: I'd describe her as a "charity wrangler". Never too early to start planning for a donation in lieu of meaningless Christmas presents. You know the 20$ "stuff" that fills the stocking but means zilch in the grand scheme of things. Seems like she could turn you on to something that counts at the Big Finals (i.e., the Final Judgement; not the ones at MC the final semester.)]

Peter J Dolan

MILLBROOK – Admired and respected as a national and international business man, a generous and loving husband, father and friend, Peter J. Dolan died suddenly on Friday, August 14, 2009. Raised in Harlem, New York by Irish immigrant parents, Peter’s steadfast work ethic and honest approach were his trademarks. Peter started his business career (as a young child) in his father fish store, understanding the importance of hard work and ethics in the marketplace. Graduating from Manhattan College‘s Business School in 1949 and earning his MBA from Columbia University in 1954, Peter became a CPA and partner in Arthur Young & Company (now Ernst and Young Company) – the first Irish Catholic to be a partner. At EYC, he not only became one of the top Managing Partners for the New York Metropolitan Office, but he also became the National Director of Industry Programs, leading the firm on the management of information systems, finance and accounting systems, and strategic planning. Peter’s consulting work helped many domestic and international companies. After retiring from EYC, he started his own firm and among his major clients were Springer Verlag USA and Universal Matchbox Ltd. However, it is his tremendous volunteer effort (transcending the public eye), which will be one of his lasting legacies. Routinely, he helped organizations as well as individuals by providing them with insight, direction and purpose. Peter is survived by his beloved wife, Ruth Dolan, of 59 years, his seven children (Robert, Eileen, Kevin, James, Betsy, William, Mary), his eight grandchildren and his two great grandchildren. His generous spirit, indomitable conviction for justice and honesty, his drive to be the best and his unquestionable love are instilled in all who have come to know him. Calling hours are on Saturday, August 15, 2009 from 7:009:00pm and Sunday, August 16, 2009 from 1:00-4:00pm, at Allen Funeral Home, 3270 Franklin Ave., Millbrook, New York. Funeral Services will be on Wednesday, August 19, 2009, 11:00am, at St. Bridget’s Church in Sharon, Connecticut. In lieu of flowers, please consider a charitable contribution to the United Student Aid Fund and/or the Manhattan College’s Dean Fitzgerald fund. Rohrssen, Mike (MC????)

I got a new job at IBM up in Fishkill.

*** end quote ***

[JR: Congrats. I'm still trying to decide if I am "unemployed" or "retired" (again). Or just annoying. Any Fishkill Jaspers available to celebrate with Jasper Mike? I'd go, but there's no Jasper Jottings expense account.]

PrayersRequested: A Jasper’s child could use some relief

*** begin quote ***

She continues to get oral chemo every night with a second chemo on Wednesdays. She tolerates it well enough most of the time, but gets nauseous in the mornings about once a week. Her tummy issues aren’t obsolete and she often has pain, constipation and bloating, but are manageable enough with Miralax.

*** end quote ***

[JR: OK, my fellow Jaspers, we need some prayers for “constipation”. While it may sound flip, this is a little child we are talking about. So, I think we should be willing to try anything. And, if it impacts one Jasper’s child, it must impact many children. So, I’m for trying anything. Besides, doesn’t MC have a specialty of “sanitary engineering”?]

[JR: I wonder what MC's impact. I see some characteristics: 46 year marriage, lifetime of national service, life long learner, and ends with a scholarship. Makes me wonder. Make me humble.]

Poor economy drives down New Jersey divorce rate
by Joseph R. Perone/The Star-Ledger
Sunday August 09, 2009, 8:55 PM

*** begin quote ***

Couples in New Jersey are divorcing at a lower rate this year as the recession takes its toll on family finances and raises the cost of splitting up.

The number of new divorce cases filed during the first six months of the year fell 9 percent — to 28,579 — compared with the same period a year ago, according to the latest figures from the state Administrative Office of the Courts.

A small gift. A chance to perhaps reflect on the decision. The possibility of avoiding the disaster?

One can only pray.
