Remembering Danny The Real Jazz

Peter Quinn remembers Daniel Cassidy, the author of “How the Irish Invented Slang,” as “a deeply spiritual man of passionate intensity and resonant laughter … a social visionary filled with savage indignation against snobbery, pretense, arrogance …”

On behalf of myself and Irish-American writers and artists, I’m here to talk about a truly great human being, our dear friend, Danny Cassidy. But let me begin long ago and far away, over forty years ago, when I was a freshman at Manhattan College in the Bronx. (And anyone interested in finding out how a college named Manhattan wound up in the Bronx should see me later.)

Daniel Cassidy died on October 11, 2008 at his home in San Francisco. <>br> Peter Quinn gave the above eulogy at the funeral service in St. Paul’s Church, San Francisco, on October 21.

Next time students run riot on Fordham Road
Posted by TheYank at 9/21/2009 9:25 AM EDT

I only just came across this story from last Monday. A family in Dundalk, Co. Louth found themselves living in a neighborhood with a large population of students from the local Institute of Technology.

This is what the Daily Star says the McNamee family had to endure:

* parties every weekend;

{Extraneous Deleted}

   * and, recently, women walking naked up and down the road.

Needless to say that McNamees were ticked off about this. What struck me, however, was the fact that they said that the students had made their residential area “like the Bronx.”

I went to college in the Bronx and I have to say I don’t remember anything like this, probably because the college I attended was for serious, well-mannered young men and women hoping to play a positive role in society.

[JR: That's how I remember it too. What I remember!]

My guess is the McNamees are talking about Fordham’s students. Next door to Fordham is the Bronx Zoo — enough said! However, next time Fordham’s students escape the confines of the zoo the residents might well say that the students had made their neighborhood like Dundalk.

Actually, I doubt Fordham’s students get up to this much anti-social behavior in the neighborhood around the University. And, I know there used to be and probably still is the occasional minor tiff between Manhattan College’s students and the residents of Riverdale. Still, what the McNamees had to endure sounds extreme.

{Extraneous Deleted}

Fortunately for me and for the residents of Riverdale, NY I lived on campus for the full four years of college. So, my penchant for relaxing by shooting a hockey puck off the fire hydrant in our hallway only disturbed other students, who were equally good at disturbing me.

[JR: I am shocked --- "I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!" Captain Renault in Casablanca --- that there was drinking by college students!]

POSITRACTION: Build your “Noah’s Ark”

200909040751.jpg

Man builds working replica of Noah’s Ark (exact scale given in Bible) in Schagen , Netherlands.

[JR: This may be an internet spoof. But I remember some Brother in grammar school in Math class making us work out the "modern dimensions" of the ark. In English and metric measure. Then we had to find approximations in terms of equivalents. From that I came to the conclusion, Noah was either inspired or delusional. Here's another fellow who's either too. One has to follow one's dreams and inspiration with enthusiasm. Regardless of how it looks. Not everyone gets a Burning Bush or a smackdown on the road to Tarsus. I hope all my challenges are little ones; I'm very sensitive ego-wise. I can hear you laughing now.]

Death may be final, but allegiance to the Gator Nation is forever.

Same goes for the ‘Noles.

And soon, die-hard fans of both the University of Florida and The Florida State University may be able to rest eternally at their beloved schools.

A new state law that went into effect July 1 allows Florida’s 11 public universities to build columbariums on their campuses for cremated remains.

[JR: I guess this will set a new trend. Wonder if one would be permitted to make a respectful joke. I'm reminded of the John Wayne movie "Green Berets" where the sargent wants a WC named for him. I'd like to be under the carpet of the Engineering Dean's office. With a plaque that says: "Here lies fjohn68. He spent so much time ON the carpet. Only fair that he spend eternity under it." ROFL!]

JObit: Pryor, Robert J. [MC1943 RIP]

Robert J. Pryor
Herkimer

Robert J. Pryor, age 88, of Westwood Drive, passed away on Thursday morning, September 17, 2009, in Heritage Health Care Center, Utica. He had the comfort of his loving daughter at his side.

He was born on August 14, 1921, in Herkimer, son of the late John Bergen and Helen Hartnett Pryor. A lifelong Herkimer resident, he grew up on Henry Street in the shadows of St. Francis deSales Church, where he was first educated and was a graduate of Herkimer High School. He furthered his education, graduating from Manhattan College.

A veteran of World War II, he enlisted in the US Army in 1942 and served with the 4th Infantry Division. He participated in the D-Day Invasion of Normandy and was the recipient of the Purple Heart Award. He also received the American Service Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with the Bronze Arrowhead, Good Conduct and World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged on December 27, 1945.

After his military service, he went back to college at Cornell University and Utica College. On November 30, 1946, he was united in marriage with the former Aileen Rycharski in St. Josephs Church, Herkimer. They shared a loving union of eighteen years until her passing on November 28, 1964. He later married Jeanne McGovern in July of 1967. She preceded him in death in 1982.

For thirty-two years, Mr. Pryor worked for the Utica Observer-Dispatch where he was a reporter and Regional Manager of the Herkimer office. He retired in October of 1981. He later worked as a Bailiff for the Herkimer County Court and retired from that position in 2005.

Bob had a strong belief in God and was a member of St Francis deSales Church, Herkimer. He had a strong sense of community and was a member and Past Exalted Ruler of Herkimer Lodge Elks #1439 B.P.O.E., where he was active with the annual New York State Softball Tournament. He was a member of American Legion Post #38, Herkimer, and VFW Post #1459, Herkimer, where he was awarded the Citizen of the Year Award. He was one of the founders of the Cavalcade of Music, was a member of the Herkimer Sesquicentennial committee, an active member of the Democratic Party, East Herkimer Fish and Game Club, the Polish Club, a fifty year member of the Fort Dayton Hook and Ladder, the Herkimer Rotary Club and annually served as an usher at the Fort Herkimer Thanksgiving Ecumenical Service.

In his leisure time, he enjoyed sports; he was a golfer and bowler as well as an avid New York Giants and Boston Red Sox fan. Mr. Pryor will always be remembered as a humble, intelligent and charitable gentleman.

He exemplified the virtues of integrity and devotion to duty in the discharge of his responsibilities as a newspaperman. For thirty-two years, Herkimer County readers saw their local government and events through his eyes. He was a leader in his community and accrued the respect of those he associated with in his many charitable endeavors. He was a friend to many and will be greatly missed.

Surviving him are his daughter, Kathleen and her husband, J. Michael Nasypany, of Herkimer; one son, Gary Ayers and his wife, Beth, of Houston, TX; a sister, Anne Pryor Jayne, of Ithaca; eight grandchildren, Aileen, Caitlin, Jerome and Matthew Nasypany, Jessica, Ryan, Ben and Lauren Ayers; several nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Joel McGovern; and his lifelong close friend, Phil ODonnell.

Besides his parents and wives, Aileen and Jeanne, he was predeceased by two brothers, William Pryor and John E. Ted Pryor, and a daughter, Jeryl Lou Ayers.

Funeral from Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer, on Monday at 9:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow in Saint Francis deSales Church, Herkimer, at 10:00 a.m. The Reverend Mark Cunningham, Pastor, will officiate. Interment with military honors will be in Calvary Cemetery. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Sunday from 1:00 until 4:00 p.m. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Mohawk Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross or the American Cancer Society. Pliseck VFW Post #1459 are asked to meet at the funeral home at 3:30 p.m. for their service.
