Four vie for two council terms in Park Ridge
Thursday, October 22, 2009
BY KATHRYN BURGER
Pascack Valley Community Life

*** begin quote ***

The Park Ridge Borough Council is currently comprised of five Republicans and one Democrat. The mayor is a Democrat. The two terms being contested in the Nov. 3 election are currently held by incumbent Republicans, neither of whom are seeking re-election. Should the Democratic challengers prevail, the council will return to the composition it had in 2007 – three Democrats and three Republicans. In this form of municipal government – the weak mayor system – the mayor votes only if the council’s votes result in a tie.

The candidates were all asked for background information and a statement about why they are running for council. Their responses follow.

Kenneth Brouwer

Age: 39

Borough resident: 13 years

Occupation: Vice president of electrical contracting company, New York City

Education: Joint apprenticeship Program IBEW Local 164 – Manhattan College bachelor of science degree in organizational leadership and management; projected graduation December 2009.

Elected Office: One-year council term: served 2008.

Family: Wife, Eileen; sons Kirk, 11; Luke 10; Caiden, 8; Kenny 5

Community Activities: Park Ridge Board of Utilities 2003-2007; Park Ridge Council 2007-2008; Park Ridge Planning Board 2009 – present; Park Ridge Athletic Association – coached various sports with sons; Habitat for Humanity; Rebuilding America.

Reason for seeking office:

Brouwer said he wants to serve the community and work to maintain the character of the town. “Park Ridge is a great place to live and raise a family, but there are many pressures we all have to deal with to afford to live here. I want to use my business and leadership experience to bring clarity of thought to the Park Ridge Council. I thoroughly enjoy community service and giving back to the town I love.”
