RANDOLPH — The Morris County freeholders appointed a new trustee to the County College of Morris, choosing not to re-appoint 30-year veteran board of trustees member Sandra Geiger.

Thomas Pepe, 57, of Morris Township, a former banking executive who now runs a Madison-based public relations and marketing firm, was named to the seat held by Geiger since 1979. His four-year term will run through Oct. 31, 2013.

Pepe declined to give his political affiliation. He saw an ad for the position and applied because he thought his life experiences could be helpful to the board and he believes in “giving back.”

“I believe in the value of a higher education,” Pepe wrote in his application. “I also believe it should be affordable and available to all who seek it.”

Pepe also volunteers with the Patriots’ Path Council of the Boy Scouts of America, serving as the council’s executive vice president. In addition, he’s volunteered on fundraising campaigns for his alma mater, Manhattan College.

Geiger, who was a Republican councilwoman in Mount Olive prior to joining the CCM board, said she had no hard feelings and enjoyed her time on the board.

“I understand where they are coming from … I guess it’s time,” said Geiger, a retired school nurse practitioner.
