Big cat interns help out, grow
Work changes their perspective

LITTLE ROCK — Much to the surprise of intern Ashley Bulla, three months of 50-hour weeks scooping tiger dung and handling raw meat taught her something: self-reliance.

The 23-year-old New Yorker who used to let mom and dad carry her luggage and do her laundry now gets by on her weekly earnings of $50 for groceries.

“I can go out and live by myself and be an independent person,” said Bulla, who scored one of a dozen six-month internships at the Turpentine Creek WildlifeRefuge just outside of Eureka Springs.

“I was beyond ecstatic. I was screaming when I got the call that I was accepted,” said Bulla of Monroe, N.Y., who is halfway through her internship.

“I can’t even begin to tell you how much I’ve learned here. From weedwhacking to much more important thingslike feeding the cats correctly and reading their behavior,” said Bulla, who has a bachelor’s degree in biology from Manhattan College in the Bronx.

“It’s really exciting to educate people; big cats don’t make good pets,” Bulla said. She’s considering a career as a biology teacher.

Bulla has grown up during her internship. “I’m not even the same person I was when I arrived in August.”

Bulla has applied for a second internship at the refuge.

“I wake up every morning and I don’t have to work, I get to go to work.”

Bulla and her fellow interns start at 8 a.m. to clean the cages, which takes hours, then they break for lunch, and work on building habitats and preparing the food, donated by Tyson and Wal-Mart. The refuge uses between 800 and 1,200 pounds of meat a day.

JEmail: O’Connell, William (MC1976) found a charitable idea

William O’Connell sent you a message:

At this time of Thanksgiving, Chase has come up with an interesting approach to reaching out to the community. They have money they want to give to local charities, but they want you to decide which ones. You can do that by going to their facebook page and vote on a charity. The charities that get the most votes, get the money. It doesn’t cost anything to vote.

I became aware of this from a friend who is voting for America’s VetDogs. This organization helps our veterans who may have been wounded, or are elderly and can benefit from a working dog that can either help them as a guide dog, or in other ways. What a great way to give back to those who gave their all for us. Give it a look http://apps.facebook.com/chasecommunitygiving/

Please check out Chase Community Giving Program on Facebook or Twitter – vote for America’s VetDogs and pass it on to your contacts – Your vote really does count!

Thank you and have a great Thanksgiving.

Regards,

Bill

[JR: Good idea. Maybe some of our fellow Jaspers would like to "vote".]

JEmail: Fennell, Jim (MC1951) reports on Santa

John

This years Macy parade made it clear that they fujlly imtend to eliminate any referenced to Christrmas. Santa, the children’s symbol of Christmas did not mention Christmas but rather greeted the crowd with “Happy Thanksgiving.” Last year Santa said nothing. What’s coming next is probably Happy Holiday.

Please urge the troops to contact Macys and express their displeasure by shopping elsewhere.

   customer service@Macys.com

It’s about time we stood up.

Jim Fennell ’51

[JR: Jim, I didn't see the end of the parade. I always watch a little and go back to the happier times when life was simple. Mom and I went to the parade. Wish I could roll back the tape and do it again. How much smarter I'd be. Did anyone see the end of the parade and can confirm what Santa did or didn't say? If they are doing that "Happy Hoy Days" stuff, it deserves a reaction.]

Richard Tureck, 60, in-vitro pioneer

Richard W. Tureck, 60, of Bryn Mawr, director of reproductive surgery at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center from 1994 to 2006, died of a heart attack Oct. 28 while swimming off the Caribbean island of Anguilla.

On Sept. 23, 1983, the first baby to be conceived in a glass dish in Philadelphia was born at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Tureck had been director of the In Vitro Fertilization and Embryo Transfer Program at Penn since May 1982, and at the time of the birth, Penn was the only hospital in the region offering the procedure.

In vitro is the procedure in which an egg is removed from a woman’s body, fertilized with sperm in a glass dish, and then planted in the woman’s uterus.

On the night of the delivery, Dr. Tureck told a reporter, “The last thing I remember seeing approximately eights months ago was an embryo composed of four cells under a microscope.

“Following this pregnancy right through, and seeing a human life born, was really a tremendous experience for us all.”

The baby, a girl weighing 7 pounds, 41/2 ounces, was named Jillian Elizabeth, the child of Linda and Robert Johnston of Woodbury.

Steven Sondheimer, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Penn, said recently: “That baby girl has grown into a healthy adult woman who is now the mother of a newborn child, conceived without the need of infertility treatment.

“Dr. Tureck was a pioneer in the field of infertility.”

Dr. Tureck led Penn’s in vitro program until he became director of reproductive surgery there in 1994.

Born in the Bronx, N.Y., Dr. Tureck graduated from Mount St. Michael Academy there in 1967. He earned his bachelor of science degree at Manhattan College in 1971 and his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College in 1975.

After completing his internship and residency at the Hospital of Columbia University Medical College in 1979, he joined the Penn faculty.

A fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, he was a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Fertility Society, the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, and the Society of Reproductive Surgeons.

Dr. Tureck is survived by his wife, Pamela; sons Brett and Richard Jr.; and a grandson.

A Funeral Mass was said Nov. 7. Burial was in West Laurel Hill Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd.

JEmail: McGrath, Erin (MC1992) remembers Brother Kevin

Hi JR

First off, have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.

Br. Kevin had a very lovely presence. He was warm, friendly and kind-hearted. I would see him at basketball games over the years and he always took the time to stop by my table (for breast cancer awareness) to say hello and offer his support. I remember him most for his wonderful smile.

-Erin McGrath ’92

[JR: I hope you and all our fellow alums have a excellent Tday. I hope we remember the boys and girls in far away places in our prayers. As well as all the unemployed and under-employed who have to struggle. If we can get the congress critters out of the way, I'm sure we can return to better times. Thanks for your recollection of Brother Kevin. All to easy to fail to recognize that the faculty makes MC a special place.]
