An Air Force general who grew up in the borough and is a graduate of Manhattan College’s R.O.T.C. program urges the borough’s young people to consider military service.

General Arthur Lichte, who is in charge of the Air Mobility Command that includes 140,000 airmen who fly missions every 90 seconds, grew up in Highbridge. His command does all of the refueling, evacuation and medical transport for troops around the world. He has been in the Air Force for more than 38 years and will retire and relinquish his command by November.

Lichte said that he grew up in the “shadows of Yankee Stadium” on E. 162nd Street, and attended Sacred Heart School located at 95 W. 168th Street. He said the parish, with its never-ending athletic and social possibilities, was the center of his existence as a young man.

The Lord Hears The Cry Of The Poor

Just in case you were wondering, the title of this little piece is a line from a hymn I often sing at funerals. It came to me as I was thinking about a little sentence embedded in a story I just read.

Aside from the fact that they are readily identifiable as recordings of crying babies, they are quite different. Scientists, at least the ones studying this, point to these differences as typical for the sound patterns of German and French speech. They conclude from this that infants are mimicking and practicing their native language, communicating as they can, from the very earliest.

She became chief staff officer in 1997 and corporate senior vice president in 1998. Prior to that, she served as vice president and staff officer for Customer Operations, covering South America and Central America, Europe, Asia and Africa, and China.

A graduate of Marymount College in Tarrytown, N.Y., Mulcahy is also a board director of Catalyst, Citigroup Inc., Fuji Xerox Company, Ltd., Johnson & Johnson, Target Corporation, The Washington Post Company and, effective March 2, 2010, chair of the board of trustees for Save the Children.

The De La Salle Medal Dinner is the College’s top fundraising event. New trustee appointed to CCM board, rather than 30-year veteran
By LAURA BRUNO • STAFF WRITER • November 19, 2009

RANDOLPH — The Morris County freeholders appointed a new trustee to the County College of Morris, choosing not to re-appoint 30-year veteran board of trustees member Sandra Geiger.

Thomas Pepe, 57, of Morris Township, a former banking executive who now runs a Madison-based public relations and marketing firm, was named to the seat held by Geiger since 1979. His four-year term will run through Oct. 31, 2013.

*** and ***

Pepe declined to give his political affiliation. He saw an ad for the position and applied because he thought his life experiences could be helpful to the board and he believes in “giving back.”

“I believe in the value of a higher education,” Pepe wrote in his application. “I also believe it should be affordable and available to all who seek it.”

Pepe also volunteers with the Patriots’ Path Council of the Boy Scouts of America, serving as the council’s executive vice president. In addition, he’s volunteered on fundraising campaigns for his alma mater, Manhattan College.

Geiger, who was a Republican councilwoman in Mount Olive prior to joining the CCM board, said she had no hard feelings and enjoyed her time on the board.

“I understand where they are coming from … I guess it’s time,” said Geiger, a retired school nurse practitioner.
