St. Catharine makes history
Crusaders become first CHSAA Archdiocese team to make Class A state final
By MARC RAIMONDI
Last Updated: 2:46 AM, November 16, 2009

At the start of the season, the question around St. Catharine Academy was if it could match or even exceed the 2005 team, the program’s best ever. Now it’s if the 2009 Crusaders are the best team in CHSAA Archdiocesan history. By sweeping Archbishop Molloy in the semifinals Sunday, SCA became the first Archdiocese team to ever advance to a CHSAA Class A state tournament final.

*** and ***

Although St. Catharine has cemented its dynasty, it’s also the end of an era. The special senior class is graduating and Rosso, who will graduate Manhattan College in the spring, plans on stepping down.

Who will take over the two-time Archdiocesan champs? That’s still up in the air. Rosso said if the school can’t find anyone, she’ll return. Her older sister, Jennifer, coached SCA until that 2005 team. They might just keep it in the family again.

JEmail: Stebbins, Donald M. (MC1961) remembers “drinking responsibly”

[JR: Text moved around for readability and the reference to it. No liberties were taken other than that.]

Dear Jasper John:

*** begin quote ***

[JR: As an injineer, I admire "enginenuity". As a little L libertarian, I question applying Big Brother DWI laws to basically lawn mowers. He did cause damage so that mitigates my question. But it wasn't personal injury. Now that the Gooferment is paying for golf carts, I think we can expect more of this nonsense soon. I highlight this as a positive "where there is a will, there's a way" inineering spirit. To bad he did NOT go to MC, he'd have learned to drink responsibly and harness that talent. I know all my fellow alum are responsible and creative. Hope I can be too.]

*** end quote ***

Unless Manhattan College changed a awful lot between 1961 and 1968 your statement above in caps is one of the funniest jokes I have seen in years! Drinking responsibly at MC was about as far from reality as one can get in 1961.

BTW I hope you never need a golf cart to get around but why begrudge Medicare for paying for those who need one.

Long live the “gooferment” as long as it is helping people and not killing them!

Sincerely yours,
Donald M Stebbins
BS 1961

[JR: Well, whenever something went wrong, I seemed to be "responsible". Seriously, I don't remember any disasters from DWI. Now, with the MADD "craziness" (i.e., blood alcohol greater than zero unless your a politician or cop), it's better to have zero. I'm not sure that without an injury, there should be an infraction. No victim; no crime, imho. As far as golf carts, I hope no one needs one. But, I do object to paying for them whether thru Medicare or the recent golf cart tax credit due to a stupidly written bill. Cost is a valid much-better way to ration care and much more "fair". See all the TV commercials, for the Jazzy and Hover Round? No fraud in those or anything else. Right? When the gooferment "insures" and mandates coverages, we lose our liberty. The analogy is insuring oil changes for your car. Argh! But glad you "liked" the joke. I live to amuse my fellow alums.]

The story about Idaho is absolutely true. The law permits it. And if I’m a resident of Idaho on Election Day, I am Constitutionally qualified. Whether I’m nominated and elected, of course, are entirely different questions.

Regards,
wb

[JR: You'd give up Brooklyn? For Idaho? That's what confused me. Hey, I wish I'd "gone west" in my younger days. Then, maybe I wouldn't be stuck in the Pepuls Republik of Nu Jerzee. Good luck. Time for a fundraiser?]

JBlogger: Briscoe, Tom (MC1968) is TennisTitan

REPORTING LIVE FROM THE FACEBOOK NEWS DESK IN THE VIRTUAL JASPER JOTTINGS NEWSROOM …

Tom Briscoe is wondering if he has enough influence to entice the pReinkester to include him on Jasper Jottings. He fears that he may “only make it” when his obit is found by the esoteric nerd of (sic) Kendall Park. “Can not my meager accomplishment be that I survived 35 years of employment in the public sector without my intellec…t being challenged. Can one not note with pride that http://tennistitan.blogspot.com has been published over the past 6 years without one stimulus dollar being requested.” With all due respect F. John do the right thing!

[JR: Never thought you wanted to be in Jasper Jottings. You never put your education in Facebook, so how was I supposed to know. (Automatic “finds” need “triggers.) Guess you want some more marks to hustle. And, citing “35 years in the public sector” to a Libertarian? Have you ever read my rantings? One would have thought you’d have sought “honest employment” in all that time. ROFL. I’m surprised that the stimulus money wasn’t used to support the current regime by propagandizing all the blogs. I have your blog’s RSS feed in my reader and am amazed at your ability to get suckers, err I mean opponents to come and give you a ego trip. Must be some of that psychology in action. So here’s your wish. (Wish all wishes were so easily granted. I’m still wishing to be “thin, young, and handsome”. “Rich” will come with “handsome”.) pf-Reinke-nstein (My printable high school nickname; aot ffFjohn! Teenagers are cruel. Maybe I need a psy-kolo-gist?!)]

TennisTitan is a journal devoted to the tennis exploits of a 3.5 hacker in Yonkers NY who continues to enjoy the game immensely. TT relishes chronicaling his matches against his peers in NY and Fl as much as his on-court play. It is a sometimes humorous, often self-deprecating attempt to report on matches of no consequence through the eyes of a man of limited ability and no formal training in a sport for which he has an undying passion. Enjoy the read as much as I liked playing you.

JObit: Foody, William Joseph “Bill” [MC1955 RIP]

http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/stltoday/obituary.aspx?page=lifestory&pid=135948605

William “Bill” Joseph Foody

Foody, William Joseph “Bill”, age 78, a resident of Riverside for 8 years went to be with the Lord on October 30, 2009.

Bill was the first U.S. born child of William and Mary Foody, recent immigrants from Ireland. Bill was born in New York City on September 16, 1931 and he became the first person in the family to graduate from college. Bill graduated in 1955 from Manhattan College in New York City. He served in the Korean War and was a decorated veteran. As a businessman, Bill held several responsible managerial positions and in 1974 Bill joined Switzer Candy Company in St. Louis, MO., which he eventually headed. Bill retired in 1992 from David and Sons Co., a division of Nestle Foods Company. Throughout his working life Bill received many awards and promotions for his contributions to these companies.

Bill’s life was filled with activities. He served as his sons’ Cub Scout leader, baseball and basketball coach. Bill enjoyed flying planes, sailing, wood working, and loved to read. Both Bill’s sons and his grandson are Eagle Scouts, a collective achievement for which he was very proud. In September 2001, Bill and Blanche decided to move closer to their oldest son and family in Riverside, CA. While in Riverside, Bill was a member of the Grove Community Church and volunteered at the Riverside National Cemetery. Bill was a deeply religious man and Jesus Christ was a big part of his life.

Bill is survived by his wife, Blanche of 50 years; son Bill Foody and his wife Amy and their two children, William and Josephine of Riverside, CA.; son Andrew Foody and his wife Lisa of Melbourne, Australia; nephew Emmett Lynch and wife Fran and daughter Lexie of Pasadena, CA.

POSITRACTION: Book thief to Appellate Judge

Boy Lifts Book; Librarian Changes Boy’s Life
October 2, 2009

*** begin quote ***

“She said, ‘My first thought was to go over there and tell him, boy, you don’t have to steal a book, you can check them out — they’re free.’

“Then she realized what my situation was — that I could not let anybody know I was reading.”

Grady told Neal she decided that if he was showing an interest in books, “she and Mrs. Saunders would drive to Memphis and find another one for me to read — and they would put it in the exact same place where the one I’d taken was.”

So, every time Neal decided to take a book home, the pair would set off to the city to find another book for him.

“You’ve got to understand that this was not an easy matter then — because this is 1957 and ’58,” Neal said. “And black authors were not especially available, No. 1. And No. 2, Frank Yerby was not such a widely known author. And No. 3, they had to drive all the way to Memphis to find it.”

But the women’s efforts paid off: Neal went on to attend law school and later became a judge, retiring as an appellate judge of the Arkansas Court of Appeals.

*** end quote ***

First, it should be NOBODY’S business what anyone reads.

Second, it was a great tale. Unlike today’s busybody society, people could think and react positively.

Third, I wonder how many “turn offs” could be “turned on” with the right “librarian”.

I know my fellow Jaspers would be a lot better at this than I could be.
