JObit: Johnson, Charles D. [MC1949 RIP]

http://michelinemaroni.wordpress.com/2010/01/26/chuck-johnson-former-whli-dj-and-politico-dead-at-80-by-micheline-maroni/

Chuck Johnson, former WHLI DJ and politico, dead at 80 BY MICHELINE MARONI

January 26, 2010

Love blossomed at Hempstead radio station WHLI the day news writer and announcer Chuck Johnson, then 30 years old, met music librarian Judy Ricci, then 20.

They married in 1958 after 10 months of dating. And they were just four months shy of celebrating their 50th anniversary when he died, at age 80, of congestive heart failure Sunday at his Bethpage home surrounded by his family.

“Everybody who knew Chuck got to experience the phenomenal man he was,” said his wife, Judy Johnson.

Charles D. Johnson was born in Larchmont on Feb. 20, 1928. He attended Fordham University before earning a bachelor’s degree in broadcasting from Manhattan College in 1949.

After serving in the U.S. Army, working in the intelligence division, Chuck Johnson combined his degree and love of entertaining and landed jobs in radio.

Johnson captured listeners by impersonating famous people like Jimmy Stewart, Clark Gable and the Kennedy brothers, Ted and John, said his son, Matthew Johnson of Bethpage.

He was also a gifted writer and poet. After JFK’s assassination, Johnson shared a story he wrote about the late president on the air, said Judy Johnson. And that rerouted him into the world of politics because it caught the ear of then-Nassau County Democratic Party chairman Jack English. Johnson started as a public relations person in 1960 for the Town of Oyster Bay’s then-Supervisor Michael Petito.

He retired in 1998 as deputy supervisor for Oyster Bay Town serving under then-Supervisor Lewis Yevoli.

The Johnsons’ neighbor of 25 years and fellow Democrat Angela Mellody said she used to love discussing politics with him. “Chuck was always a delight,” Mellody said. “He had great stories.”

Although Johnson was an important man at work, relatives said he was equally as important at home. Judy Johnson remembered her husband changing diapers, taking the two boys to sporting events and chauffeuring their two daughters.

“He would do anything for you,” Matthew Johnson said.

Chuck Johnson was also the president of the Little Midget football team in Bethpage, known as the Bethpage Panthers, and was an avid bowler, said Matthew Johnson.

Most of all, his son said, he looked forward to watching reruns of “The Honeymooners” with his father and going for weekend breakfasts together.

Besides his wife and son Matthew, he is survived by daughter Vickie Knauf of Orlando, Fla., son Christopher Johnson of Patchogue, daughter Jen Farahat of Lynbrook and four grandchildren.

After today’s 11 a.m. service at Arthur F. White Funeral Home in Bethpage, he will be buried with military honors at Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton.

110 Candles
Jennie Fanshier celebrates milestone
By SUSAN THACKER

*** begin quote ***

Jennie Fanshier has seen it all — from the horse-and-buggy days to the era of jet airplanes. She’s even taken a helicopter ride with her grandson, Ron Koelsch. On Monday, Fanshier celebrated a milestone few will reach: her 110th birthday.

Staff and residents at Great Bend Health & Rehabilitation Center marked the occasion with cake after being serenaded by the Great Bend High School Jazz Band and Ellinwood High School’s Mystic Blues choir.

“Welcome to my 110th birthday,” she said. “One hundred … and 10 … years old!”

The wedding dress and high-top lace-up shoes she wore when she married Henry Fanshier on June 4, 1921, at St. John were on display at the front of the room. Seeing the treasured dress, she pointed it out to a friend. “My sister made it,” she said.

“During World War II tires and many other supplies were rationed. Lightning struck our garage, burning the building and car. We needed transportation so managed to buy one at a ‘black market’ price. Robert enlisted in the service from Manhattan College. He was overseas for more than two years. After the war he returned to college, got his degree, and taught G.I.S. on the farm program. As we worked throughout the years, we prospered with the help of a little oil under our land. Great Bend also prospered with the oil boom. In 1945 the farmers got electricity. I could scarcely believe the changes in our lives: electric stove, refrigerator, lights, radio, hot water, followed by a TV. Who could ask for more?”

*** and ***

In 1994, she wrote a brief autobiography, noting these and other events, including her husband’s passing in 1973.

“I asked the doctor what is keeping me here,” she wrote at age 94. “He replied, ‘It’s your sense of humor.’”

“Joy comes to all ages — the love we hope to keep, the bonds uniting us and ours together. Always. — I will finish with love and a hug.”

A La Recerche de ma Jeunesse perdue

*** begin quote ***

Have I told you about “Friday Night Shots?” Well, actually, it was a practice known as “Advertisement of Defects,” held every Friday night after dinner and a walk, at St. Joseph’s Normal Institute in Barrytown, NY, where I studied for the religious life as a youngster. The place was known as a “pre-novitiate,” and consequently all the students were “sub-novices.” And Friday nights we all got our comeuppances. All the sub-novices would take their places at their desks in the common room, and the Brother Director would sit facing us at a desk on a raised stage. He would rap on his desk with a metal object…(a pen or some such thing,) and each time he rapped, one of us would stand, and would remain standing while all the other students took “shots” at us, telling what was wrong with us. When it was my turn they usually told me I bragged too much. (among other things.)

Well, it was probably true. And by your leave, I’m going to brag a bit right now, but I’ll try to keep it short, or at least amusing.

*** and ***

Well, long story short, things continued like this pretty much. After graduating high school in Barrytown, I decided not to enter the religious life and I came home to the Bronx and I went to Manhattan College. There was this math professor at the college that we called “Batman.” I so impressed Batman that Batman shadowed me everywhere, trying to convince me to major in math. I didn’t see much sense in doing so, since it looked like the only thing you could do with math was get a job teaching math. “Batman,” by the way, was so named because he was a Christian Brother from France, and in France the Christian Brothers wore capes. In America, no capes.
