Dr. Zia, I remember him. Never had him as a teacher but the story about his famous statement to 2 engineering students was all over campus, “You build bridge, bridge fall down, no partial credit!”

the late always urbane Professor Themistocles Acconci (great name, or what!) of the bookstore told me he anticipated Dr Zia’s announces arrival with great eagerness, anxious for a fellow Italian-Erican faculty member (years before Professors Mancuso and del Vecchio, evidently). Picture his disappointment when he met him

But, I never saw Doctor Z without a smile. Like the guy got paid by the head when he operated the guillotine. Argh! Still hurts even to this day!

Amazing! No matter how many times I see the film clip of the vibrating bridge it fascinates me. I wonder who was crazy enough to stand near it and do the filming.
Call me stupid Gerry but what do 2 criminals have to do with a collapsing bridge?

I can PERSONALLY attest to the accuracy of the “bridge fall down; no credit; no partial credit!” with a excrement eating grin during the whole episode. It was a wonder he wasn’t murdered.
I know he flunked at least ONE double EE senior — not me — who missed graduation, had to go to summer school, and lost his promised job. He was NOT a happy camper.
He was one of the most feared and hated teachers. There were others, but no one who smiled while your particular Titanic sunk. … See More
I will never forget that grin!

FJohn – I knew many fellow students who had Zia for calculus and there was much lamenting among them. I heard Zia had it out for engineers. The reason I heard for Zia’s dislike of engineers was that they were only interested in making money or getting a job and not truly learning the subject of math. Glad I didn’t get him as a teacher. I had DiLillo for calculus and Stolze for dff eq, both excellent teachers.
