Steve LePorisz, Class of ’05

It is with the deepest sadness that I inform you of the untimely passing of fellow Jasper, Steve LePorisz. Steve graduated in the Class of 2005 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. Since his graduation, he worked for both Turner Construction and Collado Engineering, a small consulting engineering firm in Westchester County. Steve brought a vibrant spirit, leadership, and guidance to everyone he knew. Most importantly, Steve was also a dear friend to many of us. He will be missed by many, but forgotten by no one.

Steve’s family and closest friends will be hosting a fundraiser in his honor at Rory Dolan’s Restaurant (890 McLean Avenue Yonkers, NY 10704, Telephone 914-776-2946) this Saturday, April 3rd starting at 4 PM. All proceeds from the event will be used to establish an academic scholarship in Steve’s memory at Manhattan College. If you are unable to attend the fundraiser, and would still like to contribute you may mail your donations to P.O. Box 208, Yonkers, NY 10710. Please make personal checks payable to Steve’s dad, Steve LePorisz, Sr.

JEMAIL: FYI to all MC alum authors, and would be authors

Two things:

(1) Last night, I passed to the MC Library Director Ms. Duchon the two volume set of “CHURCH 10●19●62″. There’s a room in the library where they host / house all books written by alums. So, any alum author, who wants immortality, should donate a copy of their book to the MC Library. Next time I visit my books, I’ll post directions to the room and maybe a picture. (I left a message for any readers in those books.)

(2) My experience with self-publishing a book, with the web-based service Lulu, was paradigm shifting for me. For basically the cost of my time, I was able to produce a hardback and a two volume paperback of “CHURCH 10●19●62″. (It’s called “Print On Demand”. You never pay unless you order a copy. When someone buys a copy from your “storefront”, then they pay for the printing. It takes about a week or two for the copy to come from who knows where. Can’t believe I sold so many copies. Not that you’ll get rich unless your name is Patterson!) Wayne Dyer, the self-help guru, says something like “The Universe is One Song and we are all in the chorus”. Taking that metaphor, with Lulu, there is no reason for allowing your particular “song” to go unsung. If you can write or record your dikw (i.e., Data, Information, Wisdom, Knowledge), then there is no excuse not to publish your book. (It may be a mortal sin of selfishness to deprive humanity of your story?) No one should be allowed to leave the field of battle, aka “this vale of tears”, without leaving their message behind for other and future generations. Now we have the technology to make it relatively painless. When you donate a copy to the MC library, you inspire others and capture immortality. Well, at least the most immortality that I know other than having children. (Contact me if you want to know more about my experience. With the book. Ain’t got no kids! LOL, The Universe correcting its mistakes? )

Submitted for your consideration,
fjohn

P.S.: I’ll be happy to post anyone’s pictures taken in the Library with my books. Sort of like a “Where’s Waldo” scavenger hunt. (Not that I’m egotistical, but I am shameless about pandering for Jasper Jottings material.)

Beverly, Mass. —

Dear editor,

I am running for a seat on the Ipswich School Committee and wish to briefly introduce myself to Ipswich residents. A former high school and college professor, the author of “Becoming a Father”(Bantam), and a parent and grandparent, I am a passionate supporter of education. For the past 10 years, I have been an executive speechwriter at I.B.M and have been involved in researching and writing about some of the most exciting and important issues of our times — areas involving education, government and healthcare.

I am running to represent Ipswich residents in support of our schools, our students and their parents and teachers. Educating students is one of the most important things we can all do to help our children gain the knowledge and skills they will need to compete in today’s rapidly changing job market and to contribute to society.

I have a doctorate in education from Columbia University-Teachers College, a master’s degree from Manhattan College, and a bachelor’s degree from La Salle University. I have taught at Emerson College (journalism and professional writing), have run educational programs (Vermont State Nurses Association) and have been a contributor to The Boston Globe, Glamour, Boston Magazine and other publications.

I am deeply grateful for the education my children have received in public schools.

I ask for your support and welcome the opportunity to give back and contribute to the Ipswich schools as a member of the School Committee.

Dr. Sean Gresh

JOBIT: Eckenfelder, William Wesley Jr. [MC1946 RIP]

http://sitemason.vanderbilt.edu/news/campusnews/2010/03/29/an-april-1-memorial-service-scheduled

An April 1 memorial service scheduled for professor and ‘godfather of industrial wastewater management’
3/29/2010 3:32 pm

William Wesley Eckenfelder Jr., deemed the ‘godfather’ of industrial wastewater management by many of his colleagues, former students and peers, died March 28 in Nashville. He was 83.

A memorial service will be held April 1 at the Marshall Donnelly Combs Funeral Home. Visitation is 2-4 p.m. followed by the service.

Eckenfelder was known internationally as a pioneer in the field of water treatment and a leading authority in industrial wastewater management. In addition to founding several companies, he was an environmental engineering professor at Manhattan College, the University of Texas-Austin and Vanderbilt University.

He came to Vanderbilt University in 1969 and retired as Distinguished Professor of Environment and Water Resources Engineering, Emeritus in 1989.

His primary research interest at retirement was advanced activated sludge technology. At his death, Eckenfelder was a technical director at AquAeTer, a Nashville-based engineering firm that focuses on projects related to energy, engineering, environmental, sustainability and risk analyses.

In 2008, he was an integral part of a three-day wastewater treatment workshop – Advanced Biological Wastewater Treatment Technologies: Innovative Solutions to Difficult Problems – offered by the Vanderbilt School of Engineering and Siemens Water Technologies Corporation.

Eckenfelder was a prolific writer and he influenced countless numbers of engineers through his many textbooks, hundreds of journal articles, and courses. Among Eckenfelder’s more than 30 technical books, his second book, Industrial Water Pollution Control published by McGraw-Hill, is a classic text initially intended for the classroom. The most recent third edition is marketed and used by practicing professionals in the field.

Many students have said Eckenfelder instilled a sense of confidence in them and his door was always open to all. “As Wes Eckenfelder’s first Ph.D. student, and one whose life was professionally influenced by such a friend, mentor and icon, I am forever grateful that he came my way,” said Davis L. Ford, past president, American Academy of Environmental Engineers.

In a 2008 interview published in Industrial WaterWorld, Eckenfelder said over the span of his career he was most proud of being one of the primary developers of biological treatment technology. His first book, Biological Wastewater Treatment, published in 1960. In the 1950s, he designed the first activated sludge plant, which was a model for a pulp and paper plant, and for a pharmaceutical plant.

In October 2009, a memoir was released – Wwe: The life of an environmental pioneer – and a book signing reception was held at the School of Engineering. The following month, Eckenfelder spoke at the 2009 American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) annual meeting in Nashville. His presentation was entitled “60 Years of Biological Wastewater Treatment.”

Eckenfelder was the founding principal of several companies, including AWARE, Inc. in Nashville, Tenn., which was later named Eckenfelder, Inc. in his honor. AWARE merged in 1998 with Brown and Caldwell, a California-based full-service environmental engineering firm. In recognition of Eckenfelder’s many contributions to the profession of environmental engineering, Brown and Caldwell established the Dr. W. Wesley Eckenfelder Scholarship.

He received 28 awards and accolades from professional societies. In December 1999, he was named one of three people named “20th Century Pollution Control Pioneers” by Environmental Protection magazine. The other two were Rachael Carson, author of Silent Spring, the 1962 book widely credited with helping launch the environmental movement in the United States, and British Nobel Laureate and biochemist Archer J. P. Martin who developed the method of gas-liquid chromatography.

One of the last awards he received was created in his honor by the Water Environment Federation. He received in 2007 the inaugural Dr. Wesley Eckenfelder Industrial Water Quality Lifetime Achievement Award at the revived Industrial Water Quality Conference in Providence, R.I.

Eckenfelder was born in New York City in 1926 and graduated from high school at age 16. He received bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Manhattan College in 1946. He earned a master’s degree in sanitary engineering from Pennsylvania State University in 1948, and a master’s degree in civil engineering from New York University in 1954. He also pursued post-graduate studies at North Carolina State University.

Eckenfelder was preceded in death by his son, Lawrence. He is survived by his wife, Agnes Elliott Eckenfelder; his daughter, Janice Lariviere; his daughter-in-law, Dora Eckenfelder; and four grandchildren.

JEMAIL: Breen, Jerry (MC1971) makes “avatars”

John: Recently, whenever I’m drawing caricatures of people at parties, somebody always seems to comment “Hey, you should use that on your Facebook page!” I also noticed that some of my own Facebook friends, like me, were using my caricatures of them as their Facebook “avatar”. (It’s an ancient Hindu term for a god manifesting themselves in a form visible to us mortals, but it’s also computer newspeak for the picture that you put at the top of your Facebook page.) So it looks like this is a new field for caricature artists like me to explore. Here are a few sample avatars. Jaspers can check out my website at www.newbreen.com for more info on how they can get their own cartoon avatar. Thanks, Jerry Breen MC’71
