Mary Haskins, wife of UTEP’s legendary coach, reflects during a familiar month

EL PASO — Mary Haskins is no stranger to the March madness that is the NCAA men’s basketball championship.
She was there during all 14 NCAA tournament berths her husband, Don Haskins, made, as head coach of Texas Western College, now known as the University of Texas at El Paso.
Mary Haskins remembers every one of those Selection Sundays as she watched attentively to see if UTEP would be invited to the big dance.
“March has always meant the NCAA tournament to me,” she said. “I would watch wondering if we were going to get into the big tournament, where we would be playing and how many games we were going to win. I was always thrilled to death when I would see our name on the board.”
When Coach Haskins died at home on Sept. 7, 2008, … …

Q What do you think of next year’s team?
A In 1965, Texas Western was playing in Madison Square Garden in the first round of the NIT and we played Manhattan College and they beat us by 18 points. We had the nucleus of our 1966 team playing. This year, Butler beat us by 18 points in the NCAA. I hope this is a good omen for our team next season because we went on and won the national championship.

McGuire Announces Run for Sullivan County Court Judge
March 28, 2010 by thecatskillchronicle

MONTICELLO – On Wednesday, March 24, local attorney-at-law and former Sullivan County Assistant District Attorney (ADA) Michael F. McGuire officially tossed his hat into the political ring in a bid for the seat of Sullivan County Judge & Surrogate Hon. Burton Ledina, who is scheduled to retire at the end of the year.
*** and ***
During his remarks at the press conference, the candidate said. “I’ve spent the last 30 years of my life preparing to be Sullivan County Court Judge…the collective experiences I’ve had in my personal and professional life have prepared me well to follow the fine tradition of jurisprudence this county has enjoyed, judges like Lawrence Cooke, a former Chief Judge of the highest court in the state, the Court of Appeals [and] more recently judges like Anthony Kane, retired Associate Justice of the Appellate Division, and most immediately Judge Burton Ledina … a man committed to fundamental fairness and even-handed justice…”
*** and ***
If elected County Court Judge & Surrogate, McGuire pledged to insure that everyone who appears before his bench will be treated with respect and dignity, but issued this warning to defendants found guilty of a crime beyond a reasonable doubt, “I’ll use all the tools which the law provides to protect this community from them.”
“Our streets are progressively being taken over by children turning to crime often to remedy the shortcomings in their own homes,” he said in addressing the complex issues related to juvenile delinquency and what drives kids to a life on the dark side of justice. He said he would work closely with community action groups and attorneys appearing before him who represent youthful offenders to “heal broken families and teach children that violence is never a path to success, and to teach mothers and fathers what it means to be a parent.”
“My only agenda will be the health and safety of our community, our senior citizens and our children,” said McGuire in closing.

[JR: Argh! That's most disturbing. I got no warning on my primary machine. I went back and checked on my secondary; also no warning. Perhaps you're right. I'd urge everyone to use caution. Usually, malware is found in porn. (Or so I'm told. I don't go and play in traffic either. Or frequent the "wrong side of town" either. Common sense in my old age.) But, without a detailed autopsy, these pictures should be avoided. Thanks, Bob for the heads up.]

John,
I believe the obit for James Galloway of Tenafly was a former engineering classmate of mine from the Class of 1963

[JR: Thanks, Lou. Much appreciated. And, sorry about the loss of your classmate. Those always upset me.]
# # # # #
Hi John,
The 1964 may be correct, because although he hung out with some of my friends, he may not have graduated with my class. I only have a vague memory of a very friendly thin kid with glasses. His birthday in the obit would make him about the right age. Mike is probably correct about the 1964.

[JR: Thanks. Mike was beginning to get self-conscious about his eyesight! :-) But, with the wages that Jottings pays, you have to be willing to accept old eyes. Obits, from any year, make me morose!]

Clearing the fog of vision:
*** begin quote ***
Neuroscientist Pawan Sinha gave an inspiring talk to TED India about his work on providing treatment for visual problems and how this is over-turning many of our long-standing assumptions about how the brain develops the ability to make sense of the visual world.
Sinha focuses on children and adults who have grown up with congenital cataracts – a clouding of the eye’s lens that prevents light from entering the eye.
In essence, it’s like growing up with a blindfold on or while wearing very clouded glasses. The condition is easy to treat with minor surgery but removing the cataract ‘blindfold’ after childhood doesn’t give the personal normal vision.
*** and ***
This suggested to the research team that visual development can happen later in life and wasn’t fixed in the early years, as had been assumed from animal studies or from assessments of patients that had only happened shortly after surgery.
Sinha runs Project Prakash that provides cataract surgery to people in India but this has also allowed him the opportunity to study visual development in more detail and his TED talk is on how is combining both the humanitarian and scientific mission to expand our understanding of the visual brain and advance treatments for visual problems.
*** end quote ***
[JR: Wow, there is so much we don’t know, don’t understand, and don’t do! It seems a shame on the human race that we can’t help our fellow humans overcome the congenital condition. Argh!]
