“In a private fee-for-service medical system, a dead patient is a revenue loss. In the National Health Service (UK), a dead patient was a cost savings.”-Harry Bailey MD 1930-2003, Sheffield (England) University Medical School 1950-1956; Harvard Medical School 1958-1981, US Navy Medical Corps 1982-1991.

JEMAIL: Mangone, Mark (MC1977) disagrees with my ENDNOTE about The Bishops

Response to Endnote:

I grew up in the Bronx. There I was taught the difference between standing for something with your mouth or your hands and feet. It was in Catholic school that I was taught to be civically active.

The Roman Catholic Church has manned the trenches in the battle for the culture of life for all my life. They run hospitals that provide health care to poor that cannot afford it. They run orphanages and find good families for orphans. They run clinics to help more unwed mothers than any other church or several churches combined. Most of the other churches fight for there values with their mouths. The Roman Catholic Church puts more hands and feet into the struggle, and often pays a heavy price for doing this, all the while being bad mouthed by those who do much less.

Talk is easy and cheap. The Catholic Church delivers more action than any other church. It is easy to talk cheap and smear your political opponents or the Catholic Church. We need less bad-mouthing of the Catholic Church and more action.

Mark Mangone (‘77)

[JR: OK, the Bishops have said, "Don't!". Will they close the hospitals rather than do abortions? Well, it's passed. With no 'conscience exemption'. With all sorts of back room deals. With an expansion of abortion funding, as the White House basically admitted with the Stupak Executive Order. An EO that is NOT in the law and really can't 'override' the law. With imaginary funding and unbelievable cost estimates. OK, so let's watch for some action by the Church. They said "Don't" but it was "Done". If we actually get some response, I'd be pleasantly surprised. But, I expect the "King" to push the Church even more to the margins. Once upon a time, the Church was as you describe; things have changed. It's not talk, or smearing, to record the changes and opine why. We shall see what happens in the coming years. Thanks for caring enough to push back.]

CARTOON: Breen, Jerry (MC1971) gives us “The Doctor Michael Jordan”

201003220906.jpg

John: Here’s my latest cartoon. I drew it while waiting for customers at a caricature stand in downtown Baltimore the other night. It was almost summer-like and lots of people were out enjoying the break from the horrible winter just past. Interestingly, one passer-by observed the cartoon and explained to his wife, “Look! It’s Michael Jordan!” Go figure… Jerry Breen

[JR: Thanks, Jerry. Much appreciated. Never underestimate the stupidity of the American Sheeple. For the record, it's gonna hurt.]
