POSITRACTION: Make a better finger and the world beats a path to their door

ProDigits – Individual Prosthetic Fingers Can Replace Any or All Fingers on a Hand

Dr. Douglas G. Smith, a professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of Washington and Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, agreed. “Motors are getting stronger and smaller, and the batteries are thinner and smaller, too,” he said, making it possible to fit mechanical components into the space formerly occupied by a finger.

[JR: You have to admire human ingenuity in solving the problem of their fellow men. All motivated by the "larger market". Greed is good. It's motivating. And, the paradox is that someone can only get rich by serving their fellow man. Amusing?]

ENDNOTE: The Age of Anomie

The Bucket List Generation in the Age of Anomie
by Brett & Kate McKay on March 21, 2010

*** begin quote ***

At the turn of the 20th century, French sociologist Emile Durkheim was interested in a similar question. While suicide is often thought of as the result of deeply personal problems, Durkheim wanted to investigate if the act was really influenced by larger cultural factors. He studied countries’ weather and religion and economy, looking for what might negatively or positively effect the suicide rate. What he concluded, in his seminal 1897 work, Suicide, was that the suicide rate was greatly impacted by the presence in society of something he called anomie.

Anomie, which literally means “without law” in German and French, was defined by Durkheim to be a state of “normlessness.” Durkheim posited that in times of social change and upheaval, clear societal standards and expectations for individuals vanish. Without “clear rules, norms, or standards of value” people feel anxious, rootless, confused, and even suicidal. Life in an age of anomie can often feel empty and meaningless.

[JR: Well, that’s what the USA has become. No “norms” any more. The people blunder around trying to find their principles. Luckily, Jaspers have had their illusions shattered by the challenges of MC’s “liberal education” (i.e., classical liberal when I went. Can’t vouch for now.) Hopefully, we’ll all survive this terrible time, epoch, or era. I’m not so sure about that!]

JVIDEO: Romando, Dan (MC1955) shares a link to a video

John,

Bill Coyle, who was president of the college Glee Club in the early 50′s, sent members of the college Octet a DVD of our performance on the “Ted Mack’s Original Amateur Hour” on April 3, 1954. Bill’s son was able to secure a copy from the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. This was the 1,000 broadcast of the Amateur Hour. We came in second. I don’t remember who won. We sang Jac. Arcadelt’s “Ave Maria.” I think we would have won if we were able to sing our best selection which was “The Three Bells.” Due to time constraints for the show we were not able to perform this selection. The performance can be viewed on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9KZgWXpjUc The quality is surprisingly quite good. I think people may enjoy this.

Best Regards,
Dan Romando B.B.A. 55

At 32, Aliann Pompey Is Running Better Than Ever

For a 400-meter runner, that’s quite a distinction. Pompey, a Manhattan College graduate from Guyana, was a 2006 Commonwealth Games gold 2009 New Balance Games Armory, NYC, NY January 24, 2009 Photmedalist and was named 2009 Co-Sprinter of the Year in South America, but her fifth-place finish at the 2010 World Indoor Championships in March was “huge for me and something I worked hard for a really long time,” notes Aliann Pompey. “I never gotten this far, I’ve never made the finals in the World Championships before.” She gives a lot of credit to her coach, Joe Ryan, “who has seen me grow from that 17-year-old kid that walked into Manhattan College to now doing this, it hasn’t been easy.” Pompey says she loves running “too much at this stage for it to be a pressure-consuming thing. I feel like I can still get my personal best time and have the mentality to be fun.” Ryan calls Pompey “a tremendous person and very humble,” and she’s all that and extraordinarily gracious. On a personal note, she’s the last person I profiled after a long tenure writing for New York’s alternative “Village Voice,” and the article from 2003 is framed on the wall of her home. That may be one of MY proudest accomplishments. (photo of Aliann Pompey by Victah Sailer)

[JR: Good press. Hard to believe that she can keep it up. Maybe she was an injineer and ran up the hill between classes?]
