JEMAIL: Smith, Joseph H. (MC2011) about Latin Mass

Smith, Joseph H. (MC2011) writes:

*** begin quote ***

Dear Friends,

It is my hope this finds you well in this beautiful season of Eastertide. I received a letter from the office of Campus Ministry-Social Action earlier this week in regards to a letter I wrote them in the latter part of March concerning the possibility of having the Latin Mass offered in the Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers. In short, our request has been denied. While this is a disappointment and a set back to our cause, please do not lose faith in our movement. I am uncertain as to our next course of action, but I do ask for your prayers. Please tell a friend or two about our group and the Latin Mass movement, particularly at MC and other college campuses. It is currently being offered at Fordham University and Seton Hall on a regular basis and at Catholic University of America and Boston College on an occasional basis. We must keep this in mind when discussing this topic with our classmates. Thank you for your prayers and continued support.

Best Regards,
Joseph H. Smith

*** end quote ***

[JR: Interesting request. Not sure I understand why? Maybe if he wrote his request in Latin, then he'd be able to claim an ADA or language discrimination issue? Given the lack of crowds at daily Mass with a supposedly Catholic student body, maybe it should be in Greek or Rap.]

JFOUND: Professor Joseph P. Reynolds Scholarship for Chemical Engineering

Mr. Ferdinand J. Reinke
3 Tyne Court
Kendall Park, NJ 08824-1424

Dear Mr. Reinke:

Approaching the third anniversary of our father’s death, the end of another school year sends a new class of Manhattan engineers out into the working world, just as another crop of high school seniors prepares to start at the College. As his former students ourselves, it is difficult for us to imagine those classrooms without Joe Reynolds, that future engineers won’t witness his dedicated love of teaching or enjoy the wit that so many of us miss every day.

On more than one occasion, we’ve heard a particular tale about Dr. Reynolds that speaks to his teaching style: unfailingly prep red and always enthusiastic. While lecturing during a Materials class and using the overhead pr jector to show a diagram, the projector’s light bulb suddenly went out. The hopeful students perked up, believing they were about to be dismissed early because he couldn’t continue ithout it. But, probably while still talking, Dr. Reynolds walked over to his well-worn briefcase pulled out a spare bulb, and had the projector running again in moments, no doubt with a smile for his students. The lecture would continue.

Surely, Dr. Reynolds’ spirit continues to smile down on the halls of Leo, and we want to ensure the college lives on, please consider making a contribution to the Professor Joseph P. Reynolds Scholarship for Chemical Engineering. Awarded annually, the scholarship is already providing financial assistance to students in need. These students won’t have the chance to know Dr. Reynolds, but we hope they still will benefit from the unqualified dedication shared by so many of the current professors throughout the School of Engineering.

Thank you very much.

Kind regards,
Megan M. Reynolds ’96 Marybeth Reynolds Radics `98

JHQ: Engineering senior has co-authored a book

http://www.manhattan.edu/news/news_releases/022510_1.shtml

February 25, 2010

Briarcliff Manor resident in engineering has co-authored a book and has been accepted to several prestigious doctoral programs

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Francesco Ricci, a senior in the chemical engineering program at Manhattan College and a resident of Briarcliff Manor, has co-authored the textbook Thermodynamics for the Practicing Engineer by Louis Theodore, Francesco Ricci and Timothy Vanvliet. He has also recently been accepted into doctoral programs at Princeton University, Columbia University and Johns Hopkins University. The book was published by John Wiley and Sons, Inc. in 2009.

Ricci is currently co-authoring a textbook on the topic of mass transfer, Mass Transfer Operations for the Practicing Engineer (L. Theodore and F. Ricci) which is scheduled for release by Wiley in mid-2010. His other publication experience includes serving as a contributing author to Introduction to Environmental Management. During his tenure at Manhattan College, Ricci has received numerous academic awards and scholarships. Ricci is a member of the Tau Beta Pi, Omega Chi Epsilon, and Pen & Sword honor societies. His GPA at Manhattan is currently 3.99.

Thermodynamics for the Practicing Engineer is written for all practicing engineers and anyone studying to become one. The authors focus on applications of thermodynamics. They cover the technical and pragmatic problems in the field, and provide readers with a solid base in thermodynamics theory.

This textbook includes sections on enthalpy effects, equilibrium thermodynamics, environmental concerns, economics, ethics, “exergy” analysis and more. It offers both detailed examples and practice problems to give the reader an opportunity to explore real-world problems.

The co-authors are Louis Theodore, ENG SCD, a consultant for Theodore Tutorials, a company specializing in providing training solutions to industry, academia and government, and Timothy Vanvliet, Manhattan College chemical engineering alumnus and a member of Omega Chi Epsilon. Both have distinguished resumes. For more information about this book, please e-mail frank.ricci88@gmail.com.

Pax Christi to award Manhattan College at its annual reception

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Pax Christi Metro New York (PCMNY) has named Manhattan College’s Peace Studies program one of this year’s PCMNY Peacemakers. The award will be accepted by Dr. Joseph J. Fahey, co-founder of the program and professor of religious studies at the College. The program will be honored along with the New Sanctuary Movement and Eugene Moretta at its annual reception on Sunday, June 13, from 3 to 6 p.m., at St. Joseph’s Greenwich Village Casserly Hall.

It is an interdisciplinary academic program that examines arms races and wars; economic, political and social justice; conflict creation, management and resolution; nonviolent philosophies and strategies of resistance; world community and world government and more. Manhattan College was the first Catholic college or university in the nation to offer a B.A. in peace studies.

The New Sanctuary Movement is known for working nonviolently for immigration reform and family unity. Moretta is a longtime ever-faithful PCMNY office volunteer and conscientious objector.

Pax Christi takes a threefold approach to peacemaking that fully involves prayer, study and action. It facilitates a number of programs and events throughout the year that are meant to engage its members, the Church and the world in the struggle for peace.
