JHQ: Communications Students to present papers at regional conference

http://www.manhattan.edu/news/news_releases/032310_2.shtml

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Two Manhattan College communications students have had their papers accepted for poster presentation at the Eastern Communication Association Conference in Baltimore, MD, which will be held April 22-25, 2010.

The students Melissa Bekisz, who wrote “Enchantment of the Law,” and Melissa Scarlino, who wrote “Gender Role Representations: A Child’s Point of View,” are both seniors. They completed their papers last fall as part of Senior Seminar, taught by Dr. Rebecca Kern, assistant professor of communication.

The Eastern Communication Association Conference expects between 1,000 and 2,000 attendees. According to the conference’s website, “The Eastern Communication Association was initially established in 1910 and continues as the oldest professional communication association in the United States. As a distinguished service-oriented organization with a history of achievement in research, criticism, communication theory, and excellence in teaching, the association welcomes members who share the goals and objectives of a membership dedicated to participation in state, regional, and national activity.”

Manhattan College’s communication department provides three areas of concentration: broadcasting/telecommunications, journalism, and corporate communication (which includes advertising and public relations).

Fashion Student Association is an extracurricular club at Manhattan College that was started in 2007 in order to bring the fashion industry to the students on campus.

Created by then-sophomore, Jasmine Humphrey, the FSA has already become one of the most popular and active social groups on campus, sponsoring an annual charity fashion show each Spring which draws hundreds of spectators each year.

Providing students with a real-world connection to the bustling NYC fashion industry, the FSA is an excellent forum for members to experience the fashion world like never before. With exciting sample sales, designer showroom tours, and lectures form industry insiders, the FSA provides students with more than just a chance to express their inner fashionista, but also allows them to develop skills and make connections that will be helpful to them moving forward in their education and careers.

[JR: I KNOW that there’s a ton of “free” web space provided for students, faculty, staff, and organizations. (Everybody but alumni!?) It’s interesting that “organizations” go rogue and put up “MC” sites in strange places. Why? The answer I’m most concerned about is that they just don’t know how to do it “correctly”. The planners have put a lot of effort into good connectivity. Hate to see it “unused”.]

MFOUND: Chant History at Manhattan College?

Chant History at Manhattan College
by Jeffrey Tucker

*** begin quote ***

The Abbey, Regina Laudis (Bethlehem, CT.) took part in a chant event at Manhattan College on April 8, 2010. This institution used to be known as the Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart and it was host to the Pius X School of Liturgical Music until the late 1960s. The event recognized the remarkably huge importance that the institution was for Gregorian chant in America.

Back in the day, the Society of the Sacred Heart here brought the greatest chant scholars in the world to the US and let them lecture and teach. The relationship between this institution and Gregorian chant was not ended by a praise-music onslaught, however; it was a victim of an internecine struggle within the chant movement itself, and the entire institution came to be cut off from its funding source. The details of this sad event were reported in the last issue of Sacred Music. In any case, it is a grand thing to see this institution recognize its history, especially with the invitation issued to the Abbey.
