Well having worked full time while I went to school full time, (and dated full time and did lots of partying full time, great life in school), it not easy to get everything done.

Having said that get over to the Placement Office, if your “manhattan college” is the same as my “manhattan college” (i.e., manhattan dot edu), the go see Ms. Apel and Ms. Blocker are get their advice. If it’s a different “manhattan college”, the names will be different but all schools have the same functions.

If you want to do it yourself, take a stroll up and down Broadway and Riverdale Avenue at a non busy time and stop and chat with each business owner.

Then take the yellow pages for Riverdale and call all the places that might use a receptionist.

Finally, register with some of the day work places in the vicinity of the college. Go for the day work nearby and see what you can learn.

You may want to also chat with Marketing Prof (Predmore if manhattan dot edu; different name if not), to give you some more ideas how to market yourself.

Congrats on seeking employment now. It will benefit you later, when you graduate, and want to get a real job.

Remember, I think: Success for your generation is: (1) ruthless financial discipline — no bad debt; (2) a life long interest in learning — education — a degree — they can’t take it away from you; (3) a NON-OFFSHORABLE white collar job in order to save big bux; (4) a blue collar skill for hard times — never saw a poor plumber; (5) one or more internet based businesses — your store is always open; (6) a free time hobby that generates income; and (7) a large will-maintained network of people who can “help” you.

So build that network now.

Good luck,
fjohn68

JNEWS: Pirone, Thomas [MC????] runs for Berkeley Heights Town Council on June 8th

Berkeley Heights news »
Pirone cites experience on Town Council
By Independent Press
May 27, 2010, 9:20AM

The following statement was submitted by Thomas Pirone, candidate in the contested Republican Primary for Berkeley Heights Town Council.

Thomas Pirone and Kevin Hayes are running for Town Council in the Republican Primary on Tuesday June 8. The polls will be open from 6 a.m.to 8 p.m.

Tom Pirone is an Assistant Vice President – Manager at Moody’s Investors Service. He continues to work with their Public Finance group, has experience in contract negotiation, project management, and business analysis. Tom earned a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Manhattan College. He has lived in Berkeley Heights for 14 years with his wife and children. Tom is a Boy Scout Merit Badge Councilor in the District for Citizenship in the Community, Nation, and World, as well as Carpentry. He has volunteered at service projects in our town such as the “Suburban Chamber of Commerce Clean Up Day” picking up roadside trash. Tom Pirone has served on the Berkeley Heights: Town Council for one year, Office of Emergency Management for 2 years, Planning Board for four years, and the Master Plan Subcommittee.

Tom and Kevin believe the council should be a strong steward of the community’s finances. This means being efficient and responsible with taxpayer dollars. The Council should require tight expenditure controls, conservative revenue forecasting, and long term planning. Tom Pirone is trained in municipal finance, budgeting, and planning.

As Councilman, Mr. Pirone’s suggestions resulted in budget reductions. While in office, services were not substantially cut, police cars with high mileage were replaced, six streets were repaved, and worn parts were replaced at the sewage treatment plant. This combined with shopping for more cost effective insurance and other cost reductions made for a reasonable balance between infrastructure investment and cost containment, minimizing taxes without reducing services.

To measure the effectiveness of a councilman you need to examine more than the voting record. You should look at the initiative shown and the results delivered. While on the Council Mr. Pirone found NJ tuition assistance for our Fire and Rescue volunteers’ families. He also helped stop the expansion of Exit 43 off Interstate 78 by lobbying NJTPA and county officials. He requested the Administrator have Public Works perform minor repairs to the Berkeley Heights Rescue Squad building, and to conduct a ceremony honoring returning war veterans.

As Council Representative to the Planning Board Tom Pirone voted for initiatives to bring jobs and tax dollars to Berkeley Heights. He voted to construct the Loreal Headquarters and LifeTime Fitness in town that now bring in enough money through property taxes put 40 children through school, and pay for a few municipal employees every year. The taxes these two buildings contribute pay for much more services than they consume. Mr. Pirone has served on the Berkeley Heights Planning Board for the past 4 years and was a key member in updating the Master Plan that called for less housing density at the edges of downtown and lower building heights downtown which both keep Berkeley Heights suburban.

Please vote for responsible and reasonable governance on Tuesday June 8; vote Thomas Pirone and Kevin Hayes for Town Council and Joe Bruno for Mayor. The polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m..

SAVANNAH – Jeremiah Patrick Murphy (Jerry) passed away peacefully at Savannah Hospice House on May 25, 2010 after a brief illness of brain cancer.

Jerry is survived by Mary Lyons Murphy, his devoted wife of almost 45 years, and one daughter, Mary Frances Murphy of Savannah and his special companion Tigger (“cat”); cousins Kathleen Keely, Sally Anne and Tom Quinn and Jack McGauvran and wife Kathy and many dear friends and neighbors. He was predeceased by his parents Ann and Jeremiah Murphy of Inwood on the Hudson, New York. Jerry and Mary were both born and raised in New York City. They met while Jerry was with Ford Motor Corporation and she with General Motors. Later, Jerry would join General Motors, where he rose to zone manager of Buick Motor Division, serving in the New York, Pittsburgh and Atlanta zones. Jerry retired after 30-plus year career with GM. Jerry continued his involvement with the automobile business, having been summoned to work on special projects with dealers for several years beyond his retirement.

In 2001, Jerry and his family moved from Atlanta to The Landings, in Savannah, Georgia. Jerry developed a love for the South during his youth, having lived in Alabama for a time while his father was completing officer’s training school with the Army. He relished the times GM would transfer him to Georgia. Jerry loved being a Southerner but proudly maintained a “bit” of his New York accent.

Jerry will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, and wonderful loyal friend. Those who knew Jerry knew that he was a very intelligent gentle man with a great sense of humor. His dry wit frequently caught his friends off guard.

A Rosary Service will be held at 6:00 p.m. A Memorial Mass celebrating the life of Jeremiah Patrick Murphy will be held on Thursday, May 27 at 10am at St. James the Less, Catholic Church, 8412 Whitfield Avenue, Savannah, Georgia followed by interment at The Catholic Cemetery. JNEWS: Wilson, Toyelle [MC2003] Prairie View A+M U women bball head coach

Wilson Elevated To Head Women’s Basketball Coach

Wednesday, May 26, 2010 06:31 PM

Prairie View A&M University Athletic Director Fred Washington announced today the promotion of Toyelle Wilson to head coach of the women’s basketball team.

“We’re glad to have been able to retain Coach Wilson and are excited about the future of our women’s basketball program,” said Washington. “Wilson has been a part of all the success we’ve had and is deserving of a chance to show everyone her ability to coach on this level.”

Prior to accepting the position of head coach, Wilson spent the past four seasons as the top assistant coach for the Lady Panthers and played a large role in Prairie View A&M’s success with four consecutive postseason appearances, three straight Southwestern Athletic Conference regular season titles, two NCAA Tournament and two Women’s NIT berths. Off the court, Wilson was involved in all aspects of the program with special emphasis on recruiting, the development of the team’s perimeter players, scouting, film breakdown, game strategy and operations such as team travel.

“I’m unbelievably excited to be the head coach at Prairie View A&M University,” stated Wilson. “It’s an incredible opportunity that I’ve been given by Mr. Washington and our President Dr. Wright and I’m honored they felt I was the right person to continue the success of this program. I take that honor very seriously, and I’m going to work incredibly hard to prove them and others right while continuing to build on the success that we’ve had over the last four years.”

No stranger to turnarounds, Wilson coached three seasons at Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh, Pa. and played an integral role in the program’s ascension during her tenure. In only her second season on staff, RMU finished 20-10 and performed the third-biggest turnaround in NCAA history among teams after one season play. In addition, it only marked the third time in program history that Robert Morris had tallied a 20-win season.

A native of Camden, N.J., Wilson holds a bachelor’s in business management from Manhattan College in 2003 and was a four-year letterwinner on the court. As a freshman, Wilson started 18-of-29 games for the Lady Jaspers and capped off her career in 2002-03 by leading Manhattan to an NCAA Tournament berth and a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship with a 20-10 overall and 15-3 MAAC record. She also served as team captain during her stint and earned Defensive Player of the Year honors.

“Coach Wilson has been a part of championship teams as a student-athlete in college and a coach,” said Assistant Athletic Director for Female Sports Alicia Pete. “Based on her knowledge and wisdom of the game, I anticipate she’ll continue to uphold the winning tradition she has helped establish during her tenure at Prairie View A&M.”

Wilson, 28, is one of the youngest NCAA Division I head women’s coaches in the country.

“Lastly, I would like to thank Coach (Cynthia) Cooper-Dyke,” added Wilson. “She trusted in me and all the things I could bring and do for her and the team when I arrived 4 years ago. She has taught me so much that I will take with me as I lead my team in the future and in life. I am so grateful to have had her in my life and words can never explain how valuable she has been not only as a mentor but as a friend. She told me that she believes I will do an awesome job.”
