NEWSDAY   Friday, May 7, 2010 p. A50, col. 1 OBITUARY

Nassau Justice A. Roncallo

Former U.S. congressman and Nassau Supreme Court Justice Angelo D. Roncallo of Massapequa died Tuesday at 82 of a heart attack, his family and associates said.

Services were scheduled for 10 a.m. today at Maria Regina Church in Seaford, where Roncallo was a founding parishioner in 1955.

“His life could be summed up in one word: ‘faithful,”‘ his former law clerk and current State Supreme Court Justice Stephen Bucaria said. “He was extraordinarily faithful to his god, to his church, to his country and to his civic responsibilities. He saw civic responsibilities as an obligation, so that others would benefit after he was gone, to make their life easier.”

For decades, Roncallo had been active in Republican Party politics, mentoring politicians like Peter Schmitt, now the Republican presiding officer of the Nassau County Legislature.

“I would say that Angelo was the nicest person I have ever met. He gave me my start in politics,” Schmitt said. “I worked on his 1972 congressional campaign, and the rest is history.”

Former Sen. Alfonse D’Amato said Roncallo had been “like an older brother to me. His heart was big – and he was a big man. … He loved his family, and he loved his country.”

Friends said Roncallo had a sense of humor and often laughed that he was outliving several doctors who had been telling him over the years to lose weight. He left instructions for his funeral that specified it should cost no more than $7,500, plus 3 percent annually after 2005, the date of the note. “P.S. I hope I’m not leaving soon,” the note said.

Born in Port Chester in 1927, Roncallo later moved to Nassau County, with a brief stay in Laurelton, Queens. He dropped out of college to enlist in the Army toward the end of World War II and served as a medic at a hospital in Europe.

He graduated from Manhattan College in 1950 and married Priscille Pouliot in 1952. He got his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 1954, formed the firm. Roncallo & Dunn, and practiced law until 1967 when he was elected Nassau comptroller. He was elected to the 93rd Congress in 1972 but did not win re-election. He was elected to State Supreme Court in 1976 and retired in 1995.

He loved to read, especially history. And he had a regular card game with friends. “He was a terrible card player, but he loved the camaraderie,” Bucaria said.

He is survived by his wife and four children: sons Paul of Kent, N.Y., John of Yalesville, Conn., and James of Farmingdale; a daughter, Jean Roncallo of Massapequa; and five grandchildren.

Donations can be made to the Interfaith Nutrition Network, 211 Fulton Ave., Hempstead, NY ll550.

*** begin quote ***

I bet you didn’t know that there was a Schilling on the Red Sox before Curt. Something tells me that this one kept more of his opinions to himself, though.

Fun facts about Chuck Schilling:

-Born in Brooklyn, NY, Chuck signed with the Red Sox in 1958 after playing at Manhattan College.

-He hit .314 at AAA Minneapolis in his second pro season, prompting Boston to name him their starting second baseman in 1961.

[JR: Hey I didn't know the MC connection. Or care anything about Boston.]

Florence, Italy (LifeNews.com) — A 22-week old disabled boy survived an abortion attempt in southern Italy, but doctors left him to die afterwards and he survived for two days before passing away. The boy’s mother was pregnant for the first time but decided to have an abortion after prenatal scans suggested the unborn child was disabled.

Massachusetts Ballot Initiative to
Roll Back the Sales Tax from 6.25% to 3%

*** begin quote ***

Experience has taught us – and countless others – that it is near impossible in Massachusetts to collect the required signatures for a statewide ballot initiative without the help of professional petitioners in the short time frame that the law allows. Just about every group that tried without them has failed to make the ballot. Therefore we MUST raise the money necessary to hire professionals — and get them on the ground running as soon as petitions are released. Please donate now to help us make the ballot. You can donate online or mail your donation to: The Alliance to Roll Back Taxes P.O. Box 5268 Wayland, MA 01778

*** end quote ***

I applaud Ms. Carla’s tilt at the big gooferment windmill. It unprecedented to have a roll back of ANY taxes.

May I point out that isn’t interesting how the powers that be in Big Gooferment give you meaningless rights? Sure Taxachusetts has “Citizen Initiatives”, but the administrivia is so cumbersome as to make it unexercisable. A “right” you can’t exercise is no “right” at all. Like the KKK that sought to intimidate black voters, the Political Class is much more subtile. I hope that my fellow Jaspers in Massachusetts would send the Political Class a message: “We’re mad as hell and we won’t take it any more!”.

We now resume our regular programming. “Go about your business, citizen. There is nothing to see here. All is well. Be calm. Support the Glorious Leader, from who all blessings flow, in his struggle against the revolutionaries.”

Argh, sheeple!

high school report
Dubay effort to aid new Fort Kent track
5/15/10
By Ryan McLaughlin BDN Staff

*** begin quote ***

Like a lot of small high schools throughout the state, Fort Kent isn’t blessed with an all-weather track and field facility on which to train.

The Warriors practice on a small dirt track that circles the soccer field.

But that could change in the future as Dustin Dubay, a senior on Fort Kent’s track and field team, has been working on a senior project dedicated to fundraising to construct a track in within the next five to six years.

*** and ***

The featured speaker will be former Manhattan College star Aliann Pompey, who was a teammate of Ficenta at that school and a three-time Olympic representative of Guyana.

She has competed in the last three Olympic Games, and was a national champion in the 400 meters at Manhattan.

“I contacted her via Facebook. We’ve stayed in touch since graduation,” Ficenta said.

Pompey will speak to those in attendance via a video, since she’s unable to attend the event.

Ficenta said it’s possible more than 100 people will attend the event, while her team members will help serve the dinner among other duties.

“We’ve gotten a lot of support. People who can’t come are donating,” she said. “I’m hoping that we have a good turnout.”

Anyone who would like to make a donation can send it to: Kate Fecinta, Head Track and Field Coach, Fort Kent Community High School, 23 University Drive, Fort Kent, ME 04743

John,

Steve was a year ahead of me at MC. Did not know him in Riverdale but our paths crossed while I was stationed at Belvoir. He was a Navy officer friend of one of the guys in my unit who introduced us at the notorious Friday night O club Happy hour. Steve and his wife Bettsy became occasional visitors to our apartment in Alexandria. {Privacy Invoked} He was quite a character. Never saw him again after separation from active duty.

Thanks for letting me know.

Pete
