MNEWS: MC’s ROI is 12; 37th place nationwide

What’s Your College Degree Worth?

For students and their parents, it’s an important question and one that has been devilishly difficult to answer—until now. PayScale, which collects pay information from individuals using its online pay comparison tools, dug into its trove of 1.4 million reports on U.S. college graduates for Bloomberg Businessweek and put a price tag on the college diplomas handed out at graduation ceremonies this month. The upshot: With the typical college degree from the schools in this report, a graduate will earn about $1.95 million over a 30-year career, netting about $670,000 more than a high-school graduate. Not all schools are created equal, though. At MIT, grads can expect a net return of $1.7 million, making it the most valuable college degree in the nation, while at other schools the earning power of graduates is far less. Before deciding on a school, check out our interactive table of 554 schools—you may be surprised.

JEMAIL: Dans, Peter E. (MC1957) dismayed as MC hits a bad list

Hi John:

I was dismayed to see Manhattan College on the list of “Catholic Colleges” that had commencement speakers at odds with Catholic teachings (see below). Like the Jesuits (whose schools are in the Jesuit tradition), Manhattan wraps itself in the “La Sallian tradition.” I have no problem with that as long as they are authentically Catholic which many Jesuit schools are not. At least Manhattan didn’t sponsor the “Vagina Monologues” this year.

Best,

Peter ’57

[JR: Stunning report.]

In Aftermath of Notre Dame Controversy, Catholic College Commencement Scandals Decline in 2010

{Extraneous Deleted}

UPDATE 6/21/2010

{Extraneous Deleted}

Manhattan College (N.Y.)

Dr. Nel Noddings, professor of education at Stanford University, was commencement speaker and honorary degree recipient at Manhattan College on May 26. Dr. Noddings expounds a complex pro-abortion position in her book Caring. She says that abortion is permitted because women have no “responsibility to care” for the unborn child since no “responsibility of care” exists yet. She writes that until an unborn child is developed enough to respond to caring, a woman bears no ethical responsibility to that child.

Dr. Nel Noddings Honored at Spring Commencement

At the ceremony, Noddings encouraged the graduates in these challenging economic times. “Especially at this time, we might take a pledge to live a life of economic moderation.” She said, “If we must have excesses, let them be in love, learning, and giving. If you make that pledge, you need not be embarrassed by your salary as a pre-school teacher, repair man, delivery driver, or nurse’s aide, or even by temporary unemployment. Are you doing something for the common good? Something to which you are devoted? Something that makes you happy? If so, when you return in a few years for a class reunion, you can say honestly to your fellow alums, I’m doing great!” Noddings was awarded an honorary Doctor of Pedagogy at the College’s Spring Commencement on May 26. Bachelor’s degrees were awarded to those in the adult degree completion program, along with master’s degrees awarded to those in the schools of education and engineering.

[JR: I'll defer to the "experts", but clearly there's an issue here. I read some of the reviews of the cited book and found it "upsetting". Can't form an opinion on such limited evidence. But it sounds like there's a lot of "feminism" being expressed. Personally, I have always found "feminists" missed the point of "complementary pairs". It's never: "men good; women bad" or the opposite. Frankly, that's what gives us a lead over the cultures that send any "group" to the back of the proverbial bus. We need all the good ideas and energy from whatever source. That all being said, someone is going to have to explain that "a woman bears no ethical responsibility to that child" concept to a fat old white guy injineer. Sounds bad to me.]

[JR: Sadly submitted for your consideration.]

JEMAIL: Dans, Peter E. (MC1957) remembers Beardsley, Robert [MC1950 RIP]

Dear John:

I was saddened to hear about the death of Robert Beardsley ’50. I had the good fortune of having him as a teacher of biochemistry. He was in the process of obtaining a Ph.D. at Columbia. His course was identical to the one I had the next year as first year medical school at Columbia. It certainly made medical school a lot easier for which I will be forever grateful. I also worked in his lab as a glass washer. One day I broke some of the equipment. He handled it with his usual equanimity and never docked my pay. Not mentioned in the obituary in the Manhattan Quarterly was that he also was very helpful to the founder of Carvel, who started out in Westchester, in making sure that their products were safe.

Best,
Peter

[JR: Guess he knew how valuable you'd be later on ... ... as the medical editor of jasper Jottings. LOL. I remember the Carvel commercials; didn't know about the Jasper connection. So much is hidden from view. One is always remembered well for the good deeds. Even the smallest ones, can be huge for the recipient.]

DDN/Sean Bell All-Stars 103, Hoop Street 95: Fairleigh Dickinson’s Cameron Tyler had 19 points, former Manhattan College star Arturo Dubois had 18 points and Daon Merritt (Richmond and South Alabama) and Justin Marshall (Iona) both had 15 apiece for Sean Bell. Former UConn star Rashamel Jones had 22 points and Loyola’s Brett Harvey had 20 points to lead Hoop Street.

“I’m a firm believer that no matter who won the championship [last year], whenever we’re in a tournament the bull’s eye is on our back,” Sean Bell coach Raheem Wiggins said. “Just because of what we bring to the table. When people see Sean Bell on their schedule they come to play. They bring their ‘A’ teams, they play like they want to win.”

Arturo Dubois has noticed a major difference between basketball then and now. When he was a student at Rice HS in his native Harlem, the powerful big man played for pleasure. Now, he plays for money – which is just the nature of the industry.

“Back when you’re 13 years old and all that, it was for fun,” Dubois said. “Now, it’s kind of a business. It’s your future. … I gotta feed my family.”

The former Manhattan College star, who transferred to Delaware State for his senior year, just finished his first season playing overseas in Portugal. He isn’t sure where he’ll be headed next season, but he definitely enjoyed where he was.

Playing for Cv. Alianca Sangalhos, Dubois averaged 18.9 points and 7.6 rebounds per game for a team that made the second round of the playoffs.

“The people make you feel really welcome,” Dubois said of Portugal. “I didn’t get home sick a lot. The food was great, too. It’s a beautiful country.”

Since he’s home for the summer, he’s doing some of that playing for pleasure again – and to keep in shape, too, of course. At Hoops in the Sun, Dubois scored 18 points to help the Sean Bell All-Stars beat Hoop Street, 103-95, on Sunday at Orchard Beach in The Bronx. This is his first summer with Sean Bell, which features mostly Queens natives.

“I always liked his game,” said coach Raheem Wiggins, who has known Dubois since he played at iS8 as a high schooler. “I always wanted him on my team. I knew he’d be a good fit for Sean Bell.”

He has certainly been that. With former Christ the King and Iona big man Justin Marshall, Dubois, a 6-foot-8, 240-pound powerhouse, gives the team a serious front line.

“I think he brings toughness, he brings heart and he’s gonna leave it on the floor,” Wiggins said. “He plays the game the way Sean Bell plays the game.”

Dubois, 24, graduated from Delaware State in 2009 with a degree in history after “needing a change” and leaving Manhattan. He said one day he could use that degree, but right now he said he’s young enough to keep playing basketball and that’s what he wants to do for the foreseeable future.

“I love the game so much, so this is all I know,” Dubois said. “As long as I’m blessed to keep playing, I’m gonna keep playing. I take it seriously.”

Doesn’t sound like someone who is doing it for business purposes.

“You can make a lot of money off this game, playing something you love,” Dubois said.

[JR: At least he was able to complete his degree somewhere. No of my business why he left. But I'm hard on other schools that have players that don't graduate. No reason I'd be any less hard on MC. I hope it's the rare exception. I'd hate to think I supported exploiting a talent for venial purposes. I always thought that the athlete get the "you know what" end of the stick. Perhaps, there should be an NCAA rule to address such behavior. By the school and the coach?]

JEMAIL: Nason, John (MC1952) clarifies the rules on “Jasper-ness”?

John:

If I’m not mistaken, the college considers everyone who registers for even a semester or two as an alumnus for the year that he or she would have graduated. When I chaired the Reunion of the Class of ’52 eight years ago, the “official” list of our class members I received from the Alumni Office included several who transferred long before graduation – including a young Joe Sullivan. Since he later rose to the rank of bishop, I’d have to say he made the right move . . . and he still qualifies as an alumnus. Hope this clears things up.

[JR: Thanks. Interesting. I do something similar when I find "Attendees" in the obit search. But, don't see them very often. Guess we'll just have to muddle along.]

Nason, John (MC1952)

[JR: "Making the right move". That triggered a familiar train of thought. Who knows? That's why I love the movie "Groundhog Day" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107048/ Like the weatherman who finds himself living the same day over and over again, we don't have the luxury of "do overs". Nor do we have the "Eternal Possibilities Machine". ① That's been featured in many Science Fiction stories. Even mine! It would let us see all the possible outcomes. Maybe he'd have cured cancer, brought about world peace, or maybe even invented the next frisbee. Sigh?]
