William J. Burke
1917-2010
SPRINGFIELD – Leaving a legacy of love, William J. “Bill” Burke, 92, of Spring-field, departed this life for his eternal reward on Monday, July 26, 2010 from Wingate at Springfield.
He was born in Chicago IL, son of the late William and Alice (McDonald) Burke and graduated from Manhattan College in New York City. Bill served his country as a United States Army Veteran of World War II, and had lived in Troy New York before coming to Springfield more than 55 years ago. He was employed as a Newspaper Editor for the Springfield Newspapers in Springfield MA from 1955 until his retirement in 1981.
Bill was a member of the Kiwanis Club, a founding member of the Valley Press Club, a bridge player at the Springfield Senior Center, and an avid fan of the New York Yankees. He was a kind, generous man with a wonderful sense of humor and love of life. He was a proud father, avid reader, devoted husband, and a friend to everyone, especially those less fortunate. Bill always left those he came in contact with feeling special; it was always about you, not him.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 49 years, Lucille (Higgins) Burke on April 22, 1995. Bill is survived by a daughter, Patricia Kearns and her husband James of Springfield, two sons: Michael E. Burke and his wife Deborah Ann of Coral Springs FL, and William F. Burke and his wife Monique LaRiviere of South Hadley, 5 grandchildren: Kerry E. Antilla and her husband Mark of Davie FL, Kathryn Ann Burke of Coral Springs FL, Thomas Burke of Seattle WA, William Burke of CA, and Raymond Burke of NC.
The funeral will be held Friday morning at 8:30 from the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, Holyoke, followed by a Mass in Sacred Heart Church on Chestnut Street in Springfield at 10:00. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Chicopee. Calling hours will be held Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to Beacon Hospice, 529 Main St. Suite 101, Boston MA 02129 or to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis TN 38105.
