Mr. Spett worked as a designer of women’s handbags, and, later in life, began speaking about the Holocaust to students and other groups. He worked with others to create the Holocaust Resource Center at Manhattan College with Frederick Schweitze in the mid-1990s.

Mr. Spett asked that these be the final words to his story in The Riverdale Press:

“We survivors will not forsake the memories of those who died in the concentration camps and gas chambers throughout Europe. Mankind must be taught, and reminded repeatedly, of the horrendous tragedy of the Holocaust.”

[JR: Hard not to be moved. Hard to realize that it CAN happen here. Hard to realize how inhumane some humans can become. A political lesson for today. No matter how acrimonious the debate; we have to insist everyone be treated with basic human dignity. Even politicians and bureaucrats! It's hard, but we must.]
