JEMAIL: Nicholas, Douglas (MC1964) publishes his novel, Something Red

From: Nicholas, Douglas (MC1964)
Subject: My novel, Something Red, is available online
Date: July 16, 2010 2:02:35 PM EDT

Hi John,

Just wanted to let everyone know that my novel, Something Red, is available online.

It can be purchased at www.createspace.com/3460715. This is my “e-store”; it’ll also be on Amazon in a few days, but I get more of a royalty from this site, even though the price to the customer is the same.

Here’s the on-site description of the book:

They are creatures of blood and dream.

During the thirteenth century, in northwest England, in one of the coldest winters in living memory, a formidable middle-aged Irishwoman and her little troupe are trying to drive their three wagons across the Pennines before the heavy snows set in. Molly, her powerful and enigmatic lover Jack, her fey granddaughter Nemain, and the young apprentice Hob soon find that something terrible prowls the woods through which they must make their way. As they travel from refuge to refuge, it becomes apparent that the evil must be faced, and it is then that Hob learns how much more there is to his adopted family than he had ever imagined.

Something Red has an elegant prose style, shapeshifters, Irish battle queens, young love, middle-aged love, Norman knights, wild cattle, sorcery both good and evil, a cameo appearance by the Templars, pilgrims, Saracens, a chess tournament, bandits, harpers, snowy mountain passes and forest twilight, a party of wandering Lithuanians, a sweet-tempered ox, warrior monks, strong – even dangerous – female characters, ten murderous mastiffs, a central mystery, and a snowstorm that an early reader described as “one of the coldest scenes since Snow Falling on Cedars.”

Early comments:

“Thrilling. I was blown away by the end of the book. It was perfect. . . . Obviously, I was reading it as a besotted fan and not as a critic or editor. Eyes bugging out to see how it ends. So it was wonderful. Maeve, such a good character in the beginning, now fully and magically realized and all the fascinating characters in the castle. Lady Isabeau. Sir Balthazar. I couldn’t get enough of them. Perhaps that’s why I never suspected _______________ of being the shapeshifter. What a surprise! How satisfying. The showdown was just as goosebumpy as the first time I read Bram Stoker’s Dracula — up until 1 or 2 in the morning with toothpicks propped under my eyelids. For days I lived in that world and very welcome it was. The faint perfume of the children’s rhyme at the end was especially satisfying. So thank you thank you thank you for the gift of Maeve and Jack and Nemain and Hob and a glorious place I can revisit whenever I wish.” — S.H.

“Wonderful, magical, enchanting; did not want it to end. Thomas Mann said that The Magic Mountain should be read twice because it couldn’t be absorbed in one reading; I felt this was true of Something Red: the second time I read it I noticed so many things I had missed the first time, because the book is so rich.” — P.P.

“I didn’t get anything done for a week. I just kept going back to it at every free moment.” –S.B.

“I really enjoyed it. It kept me up late for two nights as I wanted to see how it turned out. . . .” — B.O.S.

I hope some of you will read and enjoy Something Red; I remember I found Michael Ledwidge through Jasper Jottings and a fine writer he is.

Best regards to all,
Douglas Nicholas

JEMAIL: An Iona grad remembers Beardsley, Robert [MC1950 RIP]

Subject: Dr. Robert E. Beardsley in Jasper Jottings

Dear Dr. Dans,

I am a fellow Bob Beardsley alumnus (Iona College, ’89). Thanks for your Jasper Jottings posting, I also just learned of his passing. He was a great mentor during my time as an undergraduate and for my years back at the alma mater on the other side of the podium. He was the ultimate professor and dean…but none of this ever went to his head…I know “collegium” was one of his favorite words.

I really enjoyed what you had to say. The word “equinimity” described him perfectly.

His after-hours stories of Tom Carvel(opolous), the USPS, dachschunds, Cold Spring Harbor Labs & Barbara McClintock, The Pasteur Institute, sailing in CT and life in Port Orange, FL were just fabulous. He was the kind of man it seemed has seen and done everything, surely a life well-lived. With his 50+ years of teaching, I am sure his legacy lives on in a lot of us.

Thanks again for your reflections about him. If you have a copy of his obit, I would appreciate the link.

Best regards,
Steve Bartush, Iona College, ’89

Hi John:

That’s a different Robert Beardsley (Robert M not Robert E.)

Don’t worry about trying to find others obits. I sent him the Manhattan Monthly obit, as you saw. I was surprised when I surfed the net not to find more.
